I caught this, didn't realise it was one of Matt's.

If aquanuke can confirm it was and that it wasn't supposed to drop then happy to transfer it back.

I was trying to avoid posting it in forum Chris (not having a pop Foz), didn't want you to think anyone was having a go 'cos it's obviously a nice innocent catch. Its since transpired that Nominet considers that the registered name matters as far as Matt is concerned. An ambiguous position for any catcher to find themselves in!

I think guys thast it was an innocent catch, I don't check who owns a name before I catch it on most occasions.

Who is to say Matt would have kept it and I'm sure that Matt's mum doesn't want to fork out for lots of transfer fees and the hassle of administering these domains for the next two years.

If I were speaking pratically and I'd passed away, I'd much rather someone used the name for what they wanted or sold the name and made a contribution at that stage if they were going to contribute something to my family.

People might think completley differently, indeed Matt's mum may think differently but just raising a thought as "Devolution" on prss is showing 190 names. That is 190 emails to Matt's family reminding them of more workload if someone on here catches one.

No offence taken here at all.

The same as GreyWing, checking the previous registrant isn't part of my catching checklist and so I'd never have known if it hadn't been posted on the forum.

I've now queued it to be no longer available for sale until someone in touch with the family advises further.

I agree with greywing, I would probably be happy at first, but then start to hate it, having to deal with constant reminders about someone I lost.

Looking at the very respectful posts in this thread, it looks like help is at hand, so anyone knowingly catching a doman like this and they feel bad about it, shoud just maybe send a small and anonymous donation to the family.

If it was a whopper of a domain, I'm guessing they would hand it over or give a fair value for it.

You would think the likes of sedo would have a portfolio auction feature. Would be perfect for these circumstances.

late entry on this - apologies and my thoughts are with Matts family, must be extremely sad to have a loss at such an age.

can I suggest that (again late entry so apologies in advance if i'm standing on toes)

that perhaps the "donations email/paypal account" could be something quickly set up by a member (perhaps admin could use the acorn donations account for the next 4 wks? use the description field to be clear) and then at a point after any auction of domains that the proceeds and donations are put together as a single personal offering rather than an impersonal stream of paypal entries? more of a domain community tribute?

if the list of domains is posted here then majority of the good catchers are on this forum and will be able to secure the "good domains" for the auction and everyone will be aware/monitor who picked them up. (everyone has some duds so i dont suggest all are caught)

and i would suggest a portfolio sale as this has a bigger audience rather than the specific domains. I'm sure that anything is better than just letting them drop?

and if you arent going to bid at auction, one reg fee donation - £7?? and feel better about yourself.

what you need is someone to flag the days drops of his and then people can put in a pre bid. That way a catcher knows that someone wants it rather than catching and being stuck with something that isn't wanted?

Just to let you know that there will be a memorial service for Matt to be held on Thursday the 29th April @ 2pm. It will be at St Hildas Church Woodthorpe Road, Ashford MIDDLESEX UK.

Wouldn't be able to attend as I live in Bristol so a bit far for me as I don't drive, is there anyway of sending a sympathy card ?

That gives me an idea, I could send a sympathy card through Moonpig if people want to give me their names and maybe I could send one saying from all at acorn.
