Now that Nominet have changed the expiry process so that it is not possible to renew a domain in the last 5 day period, does anyone know if a domain in that period can be cancelled by the registrant or tag holder so it becomes available to register immediately and the registrant can then quickly register it? Would be good to know if there is indeed a way out of the black hole.

Well I intend to. Most of my domains are registered for years ahead anyway (I had renewed them shortly before last year's £2.50 for 2 year renewal promotion and then took advantage of that as well).

But it would be worth knowing just in case in the future I discovered I had a domain in pending delete that I wanted to keep. In fact I've seen a lot of domains owned by domainers get renewed on the last day over the years. People will have to be more on the ball now.

It's possible but I guess not very likely that a catcher would be going after a domain in pending delete a few days before it is due to drop as no-one would have any inkling that it would prematurely get cancelled. But I wondered if Nominet had blocked the registrant's ability to delete the domain if it is in pending delete or whether that "loop hole" exists so tag holders have a (bit of a risky) way of getting out of it.

If you're being careful you won't get into that situation! But if for whatever reason you find yourself in that situation you've got nothing to lose, you've got a better chance hanging onto it by cancelling it early than letting it drop when numerous catchers may go after it.

If you delete a domain it should go through the delete cycle of 5 days in which it is listed in the drop list.
This doesn't happen if the domain is in the "add period" (check rdap status)

wait.... i need to pay attention. Hadn't clocked the 5 day rule. So what happens if we have an auto renew set to 3 days in the Nominet manager ? Nothing in there has changed ? You can still set to 1 day if you want.

If they are due to drop in 2 days then they are already in the 5 days "server update prohibited" so you can't do anything to them anymore.
What I said earlier is from memory, I'll need to double-check the original proposal to the ukrac (it's in the members section, bit I'm on mobile now), but I remember I was particularly happy with this change because domains can no longer be deleted secretly, they will always be listed in the droplist and then purged. The only exception is those domains that are in the "add period" which are deleted immediately, if I recall correctly.

I was responding to the original post where he asked '..does anyone know if a domain in that period can be cancelled..'
The answer would appear to be no.

I'm pretty sure the auto-renew in WDM is relative to the domain expiry date, not the drop date. In which case, nothing has changed there

Yes auto-renew is still related to expiry date not drop date.

facepalm..... of course it is. Sorry.
