Beware Brexit and .EU domains

I've just watched Patrick Kielty's documentary on BBC 1 and I'm appalled that the European Union are using the island of Ireland has a pawn in their negotiations. I'm of an age where I remember the pain and horror that the conflict caused to the whole of the UK but especially Northern Ireland and nothing is worth a return to those times.

I voted leave in the referendum but if the price of that is a return to the troubles in Northern Ireland then I'd willingly change my vote but I'd also question why any decent human being would want to be part of an organisation that would willingly risk conflict for it's own gain.

I've lived in Sweden for the last six years and the UK is a beacon of tolerance in comparison. How can we be nationalists when we so lack national pride? Half the population of this country is happy to tell the rest of the World that the UK is full of racist bigots.

You really need to go and experience life in Europe.

If you had lived in Europe you'd know what a tolerant people the British actually are.

You're on this constant quest for the moral high ground, telling us how against intolerance you are, yet yours is the most aggressive and intolerant voice on here. In fact I find it impossible to debate with you because I find myself drawn to the gutter.

I'm really not. I'm fighting small-minded xenophobia.

As for the British being tolerant - as a whole, maybe, though less so these days. If you've been in Sweden for six years I'd ask how you feel qualified to speak on this and I'd suggested our national tolerance has degenerated sharply.

As an Express/Mail quoting minority, certainly not. There has always been a section of the media dedicated to exploiting base fears and they are worse then ever - again, if you've been away, perhaps you're unaware of how bad it is/

I have a friend of a friend who moved to Gothenburg, I will ask him for more detail but my best recollection of last conversation was that Sweden is a largely homogenous group that isn't too acclimatized to immigration

Our first grandchild was born last year so we've been in the UK for the last nine months or so.

When I left the UK six years ago I had a major downer on this country, for many reasons. We moved to Sweden and went through an honeymoon period where we made excuses for the differences in our cultures but six years on, the honeymoon is over and I feel qualified to give an objective view of both countries.

I'd argue that the World view of Sweden is of a forward thinking, socially responsible, well educated, tolerant country. The reason for that is there's a collective national pride. Whatever their differences Swede's of all political persuasions speak positively about their homeland. That view isn't one that I recognise after living there for six years.

I don't feel comfortable cataloguing Sweden's flaws because I feel a certain loyalty towards the country and I've actually learned that nowhere is perfect. What my time there has taught me more than anything is what a great albeit flawed country the UK actually is, the overwhelming thing being how much greater racial integration and tolerance the UK enjoys. The biggest thing I've noticed since I got back is how angry everyone is, in fact it seems to be tearing society apart.

You and the media telling the rest of the World that half the UK population are "racist fuckwits" does unfair and untold damage to this countries reputation abroad.

People choose to come to live, work and seek asylum in the UK because of our national values yet its those values that you and half the population seek to water down or destroy. Debate is being stifled because many are afraid to voice anything other than a left wing opinion for fear of being called out as a racist.

What's your suggestion? How can we enforce different customs rules otherwise?

The question for both sides should be how do we ensure peace in Northern Ireland at any cost.

I don't know anything about Sweden, I know a fair amount about the UK.
The anger here is far from universal -so is the integration. Bizzarely the anger/fear of immigration correlates with the areas that have had the least immigration. Inner-city London or Birmingham = very low . Provincial agricultural areas = major fear of outsiders.



I was in Sri Lanka for half of last month, and I can tell you their main concern was whether or not we were lying about the Putin mafia bullshit. They haven't upgraded their railways since we left, every second billboard is for studying in the UK.



This makes me quite angry. I would argue that I'm defending quintessential British values. Debate is always welcome. Argument is always welcome. I'm genuinely sorry that that's how you see it. I have given up on party politics. I call out racism where I see racism. I am proud of being British. I am proud that my (French/Celtic/German/Irish) ancestors fought against petty nationalism. I will continue to fight.

How can debate with you be welcome when your definition of racism is so misguided that it's completely biased. Frankly you are as big a problem for racism as the racists you think you can identify. Northern Ireland was about strongly held unmoveable views on both sides by people like you who can't see the wood for the trees. Incidentally your posts are full of the bile you purport to detest in past posts. People even on your side will read your, in the dead of night posts, and conclude that a certain amount of bile surfaces in your personality at that time.

I was evacuated from school because of an IRA bomb and I'm a 1/4 Irish so fuck the arseholes on both sides with a big shiny stick
