Can you believe I have somehow ended up with two wordpress instalations and two databases, being clever as I am I have deleted one of the databases and now nothing works ARRRGH!

Hope evo support get back to me soon:confused:

Best using installatron to add and delete installations mate if there was nothing of significance in them do it now and then create a fresh install

Evo also have some good blogs about wordpress have a look at there install guide Here and there general wordpress blog can be found here

Thanks newpc

I just got a bit carried away with myself and have no idea what I did , I was thinking of uninstalling worpress and starting again but I have submitted a ticket so will wait a little bit.

I can see the attraction with wordpress but cleary have a lot to learn, thanks for the links I have been reading extensively but do not understand most of it so will just keep persevering. Wordpress for dummies is on my shopping list although I really need wordpress for completely useless technophobes;)

I got free with the evo hosting liverpool-hotels.org.uk so have been looking around for a nice theme to play with, so plenty to do whilst my database is bust!

Thanks

Aiden

I am not a fan of Wordpress!

OK so Evo fixed my database and I started again. I read all the stuff I was meant to read and reinstalled Wordpress. Off I went again and started building my site/blog, I didn't like the fact that the url contained the word wordpress in it so I read some more and changed it so it didn't.

Happily building today and the theme went missing, in fact anything that looked like a website dissaoeared? I am left with just the words of my site, I have no idea what's happened, I am not qualified to understand the database stuff and I am about to give up on the idea of building my own mini sites; on wordpress anyway.

I am therefore not a fan of wordpress, not because it doesn't work but because it is not very forgiving to idiots like me, I now genuinely believe I have bitten off more than I can chew!

I am going to uninstall the lot and try again but this is the last time!

Sorry rant over:confused:

Aiden

Did you rename or break the style.css file a misplaced symbol can muck things up can you still access the admin menu does this look normal.

You could of learnt a fair amount of xhtml / css in the time you've spent mucking around with wordpress...

I've not spent much time using wordpress but I think it's a lot easier to just code from scratch. Even if you get the hang of wordpress it's still good to know some coding

Hi newpc

No I haven't changed any files (wouldn't know were to start).

I am unable to access the wp admin area?

I am trying to work this through in my head and it sort of goes like this:

Set up Evo hosting, they set up database and in that database is wordpress with the domain name I got free. I think this is the install I have been editing and then it went? The other day (you may remember I cocked up and ended up reinstalling wp, I started building the site on this install but didn't like the fact that wordpress was in the url so I read all the help stuff on wp/evo but to be honest couldn't make head nor tale of it so uninstalled that one.

As you can tell I am a bit useless at this and am struggling explaining it, I think the fact that I am unable to login to wp admin means I haven't got a wordpress install to edit rather I have been adding content to the first install that should just be left alone.

Does that make any sense?

This is what it looks like at the moment here

Thanks

Aiden

You could be right, I have been thinking about it but have been deterred by the fact that everyone keeps telling wordpress is easy yet I have managed to mess it up for the last 3 or 4 days; I am half expecting my host to ban me for messing about.

Aiden

Sounds like whatever you did to change the url could have mucked something up. Did you mess with the htaccess

htaccess? I would like to confidently say no but given I don't know what or where that is I would be lying so I will say " Don't think so".

I think I am gonna install again and try and get rid of wordpress in the url, I know it's something to do with where I install it to so will have another go.

Can I also say that I really appreciate you trying to help me and I know how difficult that must be when I (idiot) can't even explain what the problem is.

Thanks newpc

If you don't figure it out give me a shout I'll log in to my control panel and tell you the option which needs changing

I didn't find wordpress all that easy in the short time I played with it, certainly not as easy as just learning code. But I can see the merits of it definetely.

Once you've got a template for a site written in code you can just edit the content and apply it to a number of domains, doesn't really take any longer than setting up a wordpress site. I'm not trying to persuade you one way or the other, whichever you do it's perseverance that's key.

And evo won't get pissy with you, they're always very helpful even if you ask a lot of questions

What theme do you have loaded?

It looks bad because your CSS file is not loading, it should be here:
http://www.liverpool-hotels.org.uk/wordpress/wp-content/themes/twentyten/style.css

If you messed up the theme name go into the DB and change the name to "twentyten" or whatever you are using.

Admin

Hi Admin

The theme is there "Twentyten" but can't find that style.css anywhere, there are css files but not in the content/theme/twentyten file?

Maybe you have found the issue but why would it just dissapear, I definatelt didn't delete it;)

Thanks

Aiden

Thank You!

I am taking up too much of your and others time, honestly appreciate it but think I will just start again. If I make the next one up I am going to take this computer in the garden and introduce it to my hammer

Thanks

Aiden

What you have done is not changed the wordpress path.

You'll also find if you try and login it will take you to the old path.

You will need to login to phpmyadmin from your cpanel and edit the approproate wp database in the "wp_options" table and the row is either "siteurl" or "home". Currently it will say like domain.co.uk/wordpress or wherever you installed it, you just need to edit that to domain.co.uk depending on whats there already.

Thanks Skinner,

That worked but then I was unable to login to change site because path was wrong and didn't know where to look to change it. In the end I deleted the databases and started again, fortunately the site was not that far advanced so won't take much to get back to where I was before it went belly up.

The good thing to come out of all this is that with all of your help I have learned stuff I didn't know and wouldn't know without messing up; so I am actually now not that down about it!

"You do not learn anything from your success only your failures"

Thanks everyone.

The lesson here is, if your changing the path change it in wordpress under general settings first, then move it.

Its a mistake I think almost everyone makes at first :)

There is a wordpress plugin called WP-Reset which may help you, it defaults all the settings in wordpress to the basics, always useless while playing. It doesn't restore the code, but you can do that from the updates section. Makes for easy recoveries :)
