Hi, i've got a really old site that was coded around 1995, looks a real mess to be honest. Was thinking about if it would be possible to convert it to wordpress (plus a nice theme) but keep as much as possible the same in regards page URL's content etc so not to lose it's curent rankings. I've been told about 301 redirects etc but not sure on which way to go.

If anyone has the skills / time to take something like this on can they please drop me a PM.

Thanks

Scott

if you took time to name all the pages the same you could do it easily....PM me the URL

Scott, I would suggest you to first install wordpress on subdomain. Once the Wordpress site is setup you can start transferring all pages of old website on Wordpress site, setup permanent redirect after transfer process is completed.

From my own experience, 301 redirects can't be relied upon to pass as much juice as you'd think, so I'd try to keep the URLs identical and avoid 301s where possible.

301 redirect doesn't affect your page value technically when you set 301 permanent redirect the link value will be transferred to new URL if you properly implement the 301 redirects. it's said, sometimes it can take a more time before you see the full transfer.

If you do get the site converted to Wordpress get them to use this plugin
http://wordpress.org/extend/plugins/redirection/screenshots/

I have used it on quite a few sites I have converted and it shows you stats on how many times people have use/relied on the 301 redirect.

Make a list up in a spread sheet of ALL the paths in your site and direct them to the new path in WordPress.

If it's old school then they will prob be index.asp or index.html etc so you will NEED to do a redirect as WordPress doesn't work in the same way.

You then can rename links for better SEO too not having to worry about loosing traffic. about-us.html to /about-special-product-deals/

Hope you get it sorted and pm me the URL if you want ;)
