Why domaining isn't for me!

Without knowing the domains, we don't know if you might not have been offering enough - or perhaps you were making lowball offers.

You seem like a nice chap, but based on what you've tried to catch and sell here, shows you might be kidding yourself that you know enough about what's really worth investing in - making money from domains is not easy.

I agree with you there, my knowledge of domains is certainly not up to standard and I don't feel it is that easy to gain an understanding of, otherwise I would spend every spare second on it. That may contribute towards lowball offers possibly, but I don't fancy sharing them on here, which is a shame as I'm sure the advice would be invaluable.

How cash rich is your business ?
You could effectively time travel backwards by buying a quality portfolio.
If you can buy an entire portfolio, without the seller holding back the very best domains, it could be the way to go.

Very, but for the same reasons above, it would be a significant gamble on my part to spend 4, 5, 6 or 7 figure amounts on an industry I'm not that familiar with (compared).

There's not a single domain on DL I'd buy right now, but on Sedo £10k on bookkeeping.co.uk could be an awesome investment.

Where do your skills lay Ian?

See, that might be why I wouldn't be very good at this, £10k for bookkeeping. I can't see the value.

Without being too specific, skills in running ecommerce retailers and business development, but just wanted to utilise some funds for assets/projects as I fancy a change and potentially sell my existing businesses.

I'd go with Bluerock and his suggestion.

Keep an eye on some of the domains that hit Domainlore. Seems some good domains still sell for reasonable prices.

Only buy domains that you have a serious plan for and have resources to throw at...

Focus on buying and developing, rather than just flipping - it's where the money is!

It's not it's not for you, its just there isn't the same opportunities there once was. Ignore Invicible he got in the game early with a few eaze mode domains and now thinks he's a semi-god.

Well, we all know that, but let him get on with it ;)

If any of the seasoned pro's on here would be willing to evaluate my offers made on certain domains, promising to not disclose or pursue them themselves, PM me.

It's simple...

Research, contact owners of unused domains, check Domainlore, Sedo etc and buy the best domain you can afford.

Contact end users and sell that.. eg. buy for £100 and sell for £175 with a decent margin of 42.86% with no overheads.

Don't buy or reg anymore until you've sold.. then reinvest the £175 in another better domain, sell that, buy a better one, blah blah blah

Forget rushing in and getting your own TAG, drop catching script and hosting and catcing a pile of shite. Then get the arse and say your leaving  because you can't sell them on here for £20...

The renewels, hosting charges soon sneak up on you each month.

Good little story of buying, selling, reinvesting

Though he did get an absolute bargain for his £100

Thanks Murray :)

I wouldn't say I got an "absolute bargain" at the time though (they were good for £50 each though in my opinion at the time) as this was almost 4 years ago and the two names were held by a well known domainer for a number of years without a single enquiry on either and he then let them drop. Then another domainer picked them up and listed them on here for £50 each.

The message / contents of the blog post still stands though :)

Ah I'm probably looking at it from only the modern perspective of seeing recent sales like BestOnlineCasino,co,uk £12,950 etc rather than what it may have been like a few years ago.

Great read. What did you mean or do when you said this "virtually impossible to monetise due to the subject matter and demographic of the site – at least that was what I thought until I tried something totally unrelated and thought different 11 months ago and I soon realsied it worked better than I though"? I have a site that has little to no CPC via AdWords but trying to think how else I could eventually monitise it.

Yes i know what you mean about the outgoings sneaking up on you :).

As long as domains are valuable there will always be money to be made from domains by buying and selling in the aftermarket, even if you start today. But i think we all know domaining isn't a walk in the park!, and has a very large learning curve. It may take a couple of years before you have enough experience to spend significant amounts buying and then selling.
