You would be crazy to risk your DL reputation 'for a laugh' if you have any intention of staying in this business.

In the situated Ian quoted, all they would be risking would be their bank balance. They'd only risk their DL reputation if there was evidence of collusion.

Spending a k or two over reseller value on premium domains is really not such a crazy plan - much more sensible than spending thousands on renewals of large portfolios of low end stuff that might never sell - IMHO

Spot on.

I think I've had two, possibly three domains that I'd class as premium.

What were they? if you don't mind sharing.

RE: premium

Acorn domains premium section is domains likely to fetch £1000+

By that classification there are a lot of premium names

I wouldn't pay £50 for mascot.

I don't consider Ten.co.uk premium but there was obvious profit in it at that price and I considered having a bid but was worried about possible confusion with 10.co.uk. In my opinion, it's one of the best names to be offered on DL for a while.

But this just goes to show how subjective it is. If we judge value based on what the average domainer would pay for say stage.co.uk, Lord has paid over, and you would've paid under for Mascot.co.uk, a domain you could sell on here for £xxx any day of the week.

It's absolutely subjective which is why I said it's just my opinion. I don't think the rest of you are wrong, I just disagree with your opinion, if that makes any sense at all :)

It's fine to have different opinions of course :).

You have two names on DL's front page at the moment. Be straight, were they listed with the hope/intention of catching LL's eye?

If they sell for the current amounts I won't have actually made a profit, so clearly I'm even more generous than Lordy :D.

Well, I may have put one or two on hoping that someone like LL will be interested, and I'm sure I'm not the only one. Aside from this individual buyer, if the market appears buoyant, which it does at present as a result, who can blame anyone for putting their domains up for sale. There is certainly a spike in domains on DL since, and I'd imagine Denys is quite happy with that (maybe LL is Denys ;))

USA has a population of ~ 320m v. the UK at 64m, about 5 times.

.com's resell for way more than 5 times the equivalent .co.uk/.uk

Are the .com's overvalued? Does the .com have world dominance so the US population alone isn't relevant?

I'd say that some of the .co.uk/.uk's are undersold if we use the .com as some kind of yardstick....but the market is right and the market tells me that .co.uk/.uk isn't worth a fifth, a tenth or a hundredth of the .com on many occasions.

The .com market is really something else.

Sean, I'm unfamiliar with all the names ... the Jeff's, Garth's, Andy's & Lee's ... do they buy from the resellers, thereby actually creating a bit of demand?

I think for the market to improve, it needs people to re-invest back into it but unfortunately most seem happier to bleed it dry which doesn't bode well for the future. If it wasn't for a tiny handful of people like Jeff, Garth, Andy and Lee, there wouldn't hardly be a market.

Too many premium domains are held, and have been held by the original crew back in the 90's and 00's. They are not the ones that will stimulate the market unfortunately. I do agree though that those you mentioned are a large part of why there is any value in .co.uk's at all.

Mainly as you say because .com's are world known and used; if it was a .us or .usa extension, the demand wouldn't be as great, so on that basis, .co.uk does ok.

I think it all comes down to how we as resellers value domains.

While they're on our 'to-do: development' lists - I'm sure a lot of us kindly welcome good offers from other end-users. And with regards to a beautifully brandable domain name like 'database /.co.uk' - there are probably 100s of companies (how do you check? :) ) turning over a nice profit and hiring 10+ employees at £20-30,000 per year - where using 'database /.co.uk' in a marketing campaign could do them wonders in new sales.

Considering they're spending £xxx, xxx on salaries a year - even a £xx,xxx investment in a piece of branding that will be theirs to own and even sell on in the future seems very little in comparison.

.COM may always be king (on a global scale), but I still think .CO.UK is still king in the UK and for the next few years at the very least - even despite all these new extensions.

To add to that - I recently saw a new marketing campaign on billboards all round London - a company called PCspecialist who have decided to use PC.co.uk on all their posters - thought that said a lot...

Hi fuzzer,

For a company, PC.co.uk works.

PC.uk implies "Politically Correct" to me which doesn't work for that company.

For other domains, the .uk may be the better choice, but there is still a lot of branding with .co.uk.

Your first post should have just been "Say My Name" ha ha

Welcome to the forum :)

As others have pointed out, it takes two people to have bidding war. Where purchases are purposeful have many of these sales really been all that 'out there'. Brandable names especially I think are under appreciated on here.

Yeah, stick to property development :p

Seriously, welcome to the forum, as you've already read I'm at a loss as to why you've purchased some of the names you have but domains are all about personal taste and gut feeling and if yours tells you they're a good investment, what I say makes no odds.

As you've probably read, you've become a bit of a legend around here and you'll find many members to be very accommodating but don't let that flatter you, most are only after your money ;)

Have you any history of buying domains or is this your first foray into the industry?

Its easy to make assumptions my friend. The property development is only one of many companies I own...

I got involved in the 'Internet' industry when I was a programmer in New York in 1995. I was buying domains when they cost a month's pay check

So have always been in and out. I own quite a few - not as many as professional domainers I'm sure.

I tend to buy for future company ideas around the corner. So one word, memorable business centric names - but then I just like to have a play too

Hi Lord Sugar,

Have you invested in any of the new GTLD's.

If it wasn't don't you think that would make it too easy? Now is the time to pick and choose very selectively from what's being released.

Any examples of ones you've registered?

Of the new extensions that is.
