Whats that techy site called?

Right, this is the sort of shit I'm talking about with Joomla, trying to make a post for the last hour or so, no friggin joy.

Go to menu >> content >> article manager >> click new article

Yippee, that should work, like feck, wont let me post unless I select a category for it to go in, well I've already set up a new category called cycling, but that's not showing in the list of categories, so try to set a new category for it (even though the one I made is staring me in the face), and then it wont let you do so unless you choose a section for the bastard to go in, but I have a section name I set up earlier, it's there in front of me in the section manager, but that's not even showing up anywhere on the site, and people tell me this stuff is easy to do, do I really want to have to go through this every time I want to publish a simple post? It's bollox, piece of shite software, mods close this now please

By crikey, I seem to have sussed out how to use WP now to use on my cycle.org.uk domain , not completely sussed, but starting to find my way with it.

Decided to go and try again with a fresh head after a good sleep, took my time and tried not to get wound up by it, which is hard for me as the slightest thing can set me off, I'm now getting categories sorted so posts go in the right place, getting there slowly but surely, I may struggle with the fancy drop down menu stuff, but again, I shall persevere now I seem to be getting to grips with it.

good to hear Systreg as I know you have put a lot time into this. In a months time you will be wondering how you ever coped without WP :D

Yep could see you getting wound up a bit, all been there. I spent 5 hours trying to change a file once and for the life of me couldn't work out why it wouldn't fix it. Then realised my ftp was connected to the wrong site and sending them to the wrong site, then had to go back and fix that one as well. Computer nearly flew out the window that day. :D

I was the same with Joomla, spent days on it and couldn't make heads nor tales of it. Now I look back and can't see what was so difficult. I guess I should really look Wordpress again for some sites.

I have a bit of a competition with someone at the minute on one of my sites to see which of us can make the best of a site using Joomla or Wordpress. Will put it down to the vote and maybe you guys decide when they are ready.

Yes, if I can get my head fully round it, I'll be knocking a good few sites out with it, after only ever using html it could be a godsend, though the WP menus are peeing me off a bit at the moment, keep calm, keep calm lol

I've just dropped you a pm systreg.

Cheers, Aaron, replied and just sent you another with something I forgot to ask in my first PM.

Classic , you're probably not the first to have done that, and wont be the last, thankfully, I've never had to use ftp before, I just upload html files in my webhosts control panel.

I like the look of Joomla so might give that another try soon, I was going to try it today but plumped for WP again instead, glad I did, because had I again got the hump with Joomla, I probably wouldn't have tried WP today, glad I did, sort of :)

Yeah, post them up when don, should be interesting, we'll all vote for you haha

Looks like the cycle site I've been working on, and have struggled to figure out how to work for over a week, is now screwed :(

It was fine until this morning as I was working on it through the night until this morning, then I decided to see what other free WP templates I could find, uploaded a few, but after the 4th theme I uploaded, it seems to have caused an fatal error on my site, HostGator fixed it so I could login to my WP site again, but as soon as I deleted one of the themes I'd uploaded, the screen went white and gave the error again.

They again fixed it and set the WP theme to the default on you get when you first install WP, so I deleted the themes I'd uploaded, that went fine, until I clicked to activate my Lifestyle theme, and then get white screen with error message again, pain in the bleedin arse

HostGator support have been great, the latest reply from them a few minutes ago was:

I tried changing it back, but it appears there is an issue with your genises and lifestyle themes that is causing this problem. I see that there is a newer version of genisis available that you might consider upgrading to. You may also consider contacting your developer to have a look at this, as this appears to be conflict between lifestyle and genesis. I have reset the theme back to the default wordpress at this time.

Please be aware that coding issues are beyond the scope of support we generally provide, but we generally try to help out as much as possible.

Not sure how there could be a problem with the Lifestyle theme and the Genesis framework for it, as I've had no problems with it at all until loading those other themes today, I really don't know what to do now, don't want to lose the site as I'm just starting to get in to the groove with making it.

If I upload and install Lifestyle and it's Genesis framework theme again, will that overwrite all the work I've already done and put it back the the default that you get when you first install it, or will installing it again possibly fix or add a missing file that has somehow go missing?

It wont overwrite any posts/pages/categories you have done but will overwrite any amendments to the source code of the theme files.

Cheers
Mike

HostGator have again reset it to the default theme, so I've been through the WP control panel copying any articles/posts, noting down categories titles, menu and post titles etc, so at least setting up should be fairly quick if I need to reinstall from scratch.

The support bloke said I can actually back up posts etc from phpmyadmin:

Also note - you can always backup your wordpress content (not themes, plugins, etc) by using the PHPMyAdmin utility from CPanel. In fact, this can be a better way to backup the data portion of your site as it is better for handling sites with many posts, etc.

Anyone know what I'm supposed to do in phpmyadmin, because I had a look in that section and I don't understand any of it, can't see anything that list my posts to save to notepad.

I just tried to reinstall my themes from within the WP control panel so that it would install over the top of the ones that are supposedly missing a file, but all I get is this:

Destination folder already exists. /home/xxxxx/public_html/wp-content/themes/genesis/

Theme install failed.

Any ideas how to install other than in the WP control panel, which wont let me, or am I completely screwed?

[edit]

Scratch that, it appears to be fixed now, deleted the Genesis framework theme and that deleted the Lifestyle theme at the same time for some reason, uploaded Genesis theme and the Lifestyle theme suddenly appeared again without having to upload it, so deleted it and uploaded again, and the site is now back, even the posts and stuff are still there, not sure how when I deleted it? But I ain't complaining :)

[edit]

Hmmm, the posts are still there but all the front page test posts have vanished and it's just showing the default install text where all my widgets used to be, so need to do those again, and the menu has changed.
