Hi Everyone,

'Washington DC hotels' got 18,100 exact UK matches in march, according to google adwords tool.

Just wondered what people's thoughts are re. value. It's funny how it's the US capital and all that, but the domain name looks kinda clunky somehow !

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi Steve

You're rocking those hotels!

Just a thought - might be worth promoting this to US domainers, as a US company might pay more for it. IE. a US company looking to pull UK visitors to Washington, rather than a UK company looking to push visitors to Washington... does that make sense?? :)

I was looking at some travel related .TVs recently and noticed that a lot of them were owned in the host country, but targetting overseas visitors

Cheers, Jon

i did look at this recently but i didn't believe the stats,it has very sluggish search volume trends and this time last year very little traffic,i make a note of the traffic for domains i look for and this one was very low(about 5 months ago),trying to think why traffic to washington would increase so much than a year ago and can only think obama might be an influence, but good look with the site:)

But it is the CAPITAL of the world's only true SUPERPOWER, and Mr. PRESIDENT OBAMA lives there, he has a big OLD plane and a small NEW pet dog you know etc. etc....

Just kiddin'

Mark, yes I certainly viewed adwords with a degree of scepticism. Very strange how, on occassion, it just seems to make it all up ! I wonder why DC seems to lack some of the prominence of other major world cities - probably a UK perspective. I'm from New York, yet to be honest I don't know too much about Washington DC. Perhaps I should read up.

I'd presume it's possible to actually harm the value of the domain by putting together a fairly amateurish mini-site, with pictures of the White House etc., and one of those annoying 'filler' mini-histories, thin on really useful content. Conversely, I'd hope in the hands of a good developer with a creative flair it could be a real winner.

Jon, that's great thinking. I'll certainly approach US domainers and companies with this one. Have you had much success with the .TVs ?

Thanks very much for your thoughts.

Hi Steve

I seem to be magnetically drawn to the .TVs at the moment - maybe because my telly is broken so I'm trying to fill the void :)

I think they're a bit of a gamble, similar to the .me's but I have about a dozen. Good thing is, with a bit of hunting there are some nice keywords available

Good luck with Washington!

Cheers, Jon

Come back in a month and post your traffic stats? Would be interesting to see how it does.

Cheers Jon. And all the best with the .tvs.

Admin - Yes, I'll certainly do that, unless I've managed to sell it before then.
As long as obama keeps doing good things I'm happy with this one.

I thought it was funny how they reported a huge surge in gun sales at the prospect of Obama's crackdown. How ironic -

"Hey honey I gotta get down Walmart and pick up that AK..."

"Gee, do you wanna bag for that sir ?! "

Only in America..But that's quite another story !

Thanks again for your thoughts,

Steve.

Hi Steve,
I wonder how many enter "washington hotels ", when they are looking for Washington DC hotels? People are lazy....and lacking in knowledge.

. I know that there is Washington State in NW USA . There are also 15 other towns called Washington in the USA alone. I agree that Washington DC is the PRECISE search term for the capital in the District of Columbia....[BIG tourism city!!], but many people are so ignorant of geography that they will enter "washington hotels " without thinking.

Yes, Redkite, I think that is a very valid point. The search result will be dilluted for sure by people searching just for Washington.

Even taking that into account though I think there is a substantial search volume for Washington DC at the moment. There's 8 pages of paid adverts on the right when you type in "washington DC hotels" in google - I'm sure, as has been stated previously, the Obama effect is evident here.

Incidently, not to go off topic too much, have you made many sales with your 'visit' domains - without hyphens ? I'm aware of one - the destination gets around 10,000 exact uk matches per month and I've been toying with buying it. I just don't want to get stuck with it for ages and ages.

Cheers,

Steve.

Hi Steve,
I'm afraid there is no chance of me "getting stuck" with a Visitplace.com domain [ I DID NOT CHANGE THE SUBJECT EVERYONE? OK ??] , because , even though they are not generally searched for, they represent so many official sites. Out of curiosity.......and without even checking.....is it visitsheffield.com ??
I won't give that away cheaply. The city of Sheffield have the stupid "shefnet" as their domain, whilst every other place uses "visit."
Is that the one? Whatever ! Make an offer.

Sorry Steve .......you "getting stuck" with it, not me. I have just woken up after a nap. Misread your post.

No, it is not visitsheffield, Steve. "visit london" gets 18100 local EXACT searches in April [33100 global] , but my visit-london.co.uk has a dreaded hyphen!

Now, I did not go off on a tangent here, Steve. You did!! What are you referring to, please?

:DAhhh, So you do sleep !! :p

There's me thinking you're working on those animal enclosures till gone midnight !

I just wondered wether it was worth buying a 'visit' domain name - wether they actually sell quickly or not.

However....

I've decided I'm not buying any more names for a while, so I'll tell you the name - If some-one else picks it up first apologies.

The name is.........:idea:VisitDominica.co.uk !

Hope you can put it with the rest of your 'visit' empire !

Unless, of course you're gonna tell me it's worth a mint and insist I register instead !:D

Good luck.

Steve.

Ps. I quite readily admit that on this occasion I went off topic.

So just to get back on it, ermmmm.... - I LOVE WASHINGTON DC !....I think...
