Hi Guys,
Just wanted some experienced domainers to share the opinions on very general domain values in the case where you have a hyphen or an org.uk.

To illustrate.. if www.gooddomain.co.uk is worth £5000 does that give in your mind an immediate indicative value of www.good-domain.co.uk ? In my mind, it might be about 10% ... so £500 in this example.

Of course, valuations change for each domain but generally speaking, what percentage value would you say is roughly fair for a hyphenated version of a .co.uk?

Second one, same question but what is the percentage value of a .org.uk? (i.e. what percentage of the value of gooddomain.co.uk would gooddomain.org.uk you have?

Thanks for your thoughts.

Personally I dont like hyphenated domain names. Non-hyphenated keyword domain names can be valuable because they receive direct type-in traffic, therefore you can start earning money straight away with a good keyword domain. A hyphenated keyword domain will receive absolutely no type in traffic, so the only traffic it will get is if you spend the money, time and effort on marketing the website, but personally I wouldnt bother spending much money marketing a hyphenated domain, they can be hard names to remember, you could just buy the domain www.gooddomainworld.co.uk which would include the same keyword so be just as good for seo and would be more brandable.

hyphens imo are really only useful when thinking of how the compound word looks, especially relating to the last letter of the first and first of the last... if you can follow that!

e.g gooddomain.co.uk - d & d the same so the hyphen has an increased 'value' in making the domain more readable

e.g betterdomain.co.uk - r & d are semantically better and more readable. Hyphen add no value whatsoever. It's a poor mans' choice.

Of course top domainers may often be reticent about registering either good version and may only want the better version! The nature of the beast!

I'm an seo expert and always expect / plan to do seo on a domain. Type in traffic is never something I would rely on as a main source of traffic. Most internet users dont do it unless its a brand they know.

Therefore, if SEO will work on a hyphenated domain equally to a non hyphenated domain then they are worth having domains when the better option is not available IMO.

Anyone care to stick some percentages on hyphenateds and org.uk domains as a percentage value of .co.uk non hyphenated.

I would say there is definitely no set difference eg a hyphenated is worth 10% of a non hyphenated.

I think it's down to the end users personal choice, some people won't care and others will pull there face.

It's like you can't just say that a burned out 3 bed house is worth 10% of a renovated one because it would also depend on the area.

I wouldn't try to sell a hyphenated domain just because I think most people won't like them and how the hell do they pass the radio test ?

My personal opinion about hyphenated domains is that they are fine if you wanted to create a personal website like John-Smith or even for businesses that want a web presence but not solely rely on that for their income like business-name. The thing to remember is that everyday normal web users dont even remember the .com, .net or .co.uk extension let alone to add a hyphen. Whats more memorable, facebook or face-book?

So I say a hyphenated domain is by far less valuable than the unhyphenated version.

I do however try to register the hyphenated equiverlent to protect it if i already have the unhyphenated version like ThisBusinessDomain & This-Business-Domain.

Thats just my thoughts on hyphens, im still learning this domain stuff though.
