Didn't know manual paper transfers could still be done by the way. Could be useful in certain circumstances but couldn't see anything about it on the Nominet website, how can you get one done?

If you email Nominet they will email you a PDF manual transfer form and you can use that.

To the best of my knowledge this is not permitted any longer (past 2 yrs or so)

You may be right actually, it's a while since I last did one. It's more than a year definitely.

I would definitely like the cost to be lower, but having said that have found them to have the most helpful staff on the phone of any organisation that I've had to deal with.

What bugs me is that Nominet still posts invoices/statements out.

Just have .pdf files and if users wish to have a hard copy, press print.

Would reduce costs and the carbon footprint.

I have one envelope from them recently and it has £5.05 postage fee. Madness.

Lowering the cost of transfers would increase the rate of transfers in the lower end domain market (What Caz originally states is directly related to low value domains) and improve the market.

More domains being traded doesn’t mean there is a better market…

If someone would not buy a domain because of the £12 fee was the domain worth registering in the first place and is it worth them buying it…? A reversal would be the fee helps the market as discouragement for people buying names that are not worth having…? (This you could say helps newbies from buying worthless names)

If your buying names as a way to make income then like any business you should know research and understand your market and try and register names that are financially viable to resell a market full of rubbish is not a good one...?

At least the fee is the same for all look at the variation in registration fees from as little as £2.55 to well above £30 thats a real con...

To follow on from Ashton's post and reply to namealot, lower transfer fees may help newbies with a limited budget get started in domaining.

Cheaper domains may be of a lower quality which some domainers including myself don't want to purchase, however there are many which I have seen that could still be sold on to end-users if a little research is done (just not for overly high prices).

I totally agree, a market full of rubbish is a terrible one!

However, one persons rubbish could be another's treasure.

When people first start they don't want to plunge cash into it, especially if they are young or unemployed, or for quite a few other reasons I am sure.

If they lower this fee, then it lowers entry level to the secondary market, and speculation buying of lots of domains. I joined here not long ago and have already amassed a reasonable portfolio - I could have more if I hadn't spent several hundred pounds on nominet fee's

However, there are reasons why we wouldn't want to lower the entry level... competition, high supply, poor demand - but I have never studied economics and I am sure someone more intelligent than me can comment on that!

Its ironic. When I sell a name (I have paid £5 for) to an end user, I sometimes get the criminal/extortion response.

I seem to remember this coming up a while back. My personal feeling is that a £5 transfer fee would make a huge difference - not to large transactions, but I feel the number of bargain basement domain sales would increase. In many cases I've not bought a domain because of the transfer fee, agreed generally rubbish domains, but they had some potential merit. Equally I've tried to sell domains in the bargain basement, but when a domain is £5-£30, it is less likely someone will want to pay the extra 25-200% in fees.

As for Nominet's customer service, very happy here!

Do they? Do you mean for tag holders? If so, and I presume you are a Registrar, you can login and change communications to email only. I'm pretty sure we don't get invoices or statements by post anymore.

Sign in as a Registrar then it's under Credit Account › Statement Preferences

Correct. Thanks will check it out. I also get Registrant transfer invoices.

It would be good if the transfer fee could be added to the credit account, it is a pain having to find the card and make a payment when everything else just happens automatically each month.

Or at least why cant they store my card number? Pain in the arse as you say, having to find the wallet in the bottom of the misses bag everytime.

Amen to that one.
