UK Whois Lookup Tool

A search for "bbc.co.uk" resulted in an OVT of "-"

Thanks for this free resource by the way.

"-" means that the Overture search timed out. We all know sometimes Overture takes forever to get a result, so I set in the script a time out of 2 seconds, that way it doesn't make the script hang.

Of course, I could set the time out to say 10 seconds or more which would result in more Overture values (if it is slow at the time) but if you are searching for 100 domains at a time it could take ages for the results to come back. It's very hard to determine a good balance between getting an Overture value for every domain and one where the user wants a fast script. Maybe I should put a time out of 5 seconds as a compromise. Hope I've explained that correctly.

I see. I thought it equated to "0"

You're near the mark with this tool, so yes, some tweaking of the timing attribute would be merited.

In this case:
*I only checked one name ["bbc.co.uk"]
*OVT traffic seems relatively light at the moment [few time-outs].

Without alteration, I'd expect that your script would result in near 100% time-outs at times when OVT gets a long hammering, which is for a week or more after the time of the new monthly results being uploaded.

Good luck!

Can somebody tell me what this means "The WHOIS query quota for 83" as I keep getting this message on my script when I search the public whois, does it mean that I have reached my quota of searches on that particular IP address.

Also, what is the maximum number of searches that can be done in a 24 hour period on the public whois?

From the 31st January 2006 the maximum query rate will be 5 per second with a maximum of 1,000 queries per rolling 24 hours.

It used to be:
Until the 31st January 2006, the maximum query rate is 10 queries per second with a maximum of 10,000 queries per rolling 24 hours.

It means your IP address begins 83. something and you are truncating the full message. To answer the second part of your question see

http://www.nominet.org.uk/other/whois/aup

where it says 1,000 per rolling 24 hours.

It's a shame nominet have done that, I don't have dac access but can't check lists manually with as much certainty as before now. Are there any other resources out there? things just got a lot more difficult. I suppose it will make things more competitive when catching but buggers up searchers like me.

moniker still does bulk, they just don't show results with overture.

Perhaps you could do a different tick box for those just looking up bulk overture, that might lessen the look ups on your access. It's a free service so I'm certainly nothing but grateful for being able to do the searches on either.

Yes, it's a real pain this limitation of 1000 searches per 24 hour period, much better with 10,000.

Jay, as I'm providing a free service to hopefully non Dac users any chance you can exempt me. ;) Approximately 50 unique users per day user the script to query the whois so this new quota will be a pain to them as well.

Lee, when I find the time I will add a second check box so that you can do just Overture searches, I will add as well a means for the user to define how long they want the timeout to be with say the default being 5 seconds.

If you have any other suggestions, let me know.

Lee, I'm well confused by your post. Firstly, I haven't got Nominet or Dac membership so I can't do any more than 1000 searches per day from my script, and secondly I don't do any whois searches for myself. The limitation is purely down to Nominet.

Ah well apd, we're buggered then. Nice one Nominet.

It's given me an idea though, I'll be in touch within the next 24 hours once I've read up on a few things.

Hi Mate,

I am getting a few errors trying to connect to the site?

Sean

Thanks for bringing that to my attention DB, it seems that my hosting company has updated my server today but has accidently left off the perl module "HTML::TreeBuilder" which the whois script needs. I will contact them in the morning.

P.S. Sorry, I haven't done anything about making the whois script available to sell, it's because we've just been too busy writing the code for a new price comparison website (exactly the same functionality as Pricegrabber, Kelkoo, etc).

Thanks for the update apd. I would def buy a copy of that software if you ever get round to getting it built :p

Cheers mate

apd let me know how you get on with the price comparison, if it's not just for a client or personal business use.

Cheers
Lee

Cheers apd, Its all up working again :p I am using right now.

Its def my number 1 domain checker!
