Although I have bought and sold many .co.uk domains over the past year, until today I have never bought a .com from another person.

I'm a little embarrassed having to ask, but, how do you transfer a .com?

The person I'm buying off has never sold one either. The domain is registered with Moniker.com

Should I set up an account with Moniker or just get it transferred to a registrar of my choice after ownership details are changed?

Thanks
Paul

Usually:

a) Sort out money transfer (escrow etc) as you know.
b) get seller to ask his registrar for his authentication code (like .org's have always been) - with godaddy I think this is an email to support thing, I don't know in Moniker
c) sorry, forgot to say he has to unlock the domain as well, (usually easy from registrars interface.
d) you request transfer inward from your registrar and input the code that you were given

job done.

At least Enom has introduced this code system recently so I presume others have aswell.

note: sorry forgot to add that he has to unlock the domain through his registrar interface too.

From distant memory, make sure whoever you are buying the domain from has the correct e-mail contacts on the whois, because I believe an e-mail gets sent to the current admin contact on the domain for them to approve the transfer. Make sure they are watching their e-mail account because there is a time limitation factor involved too so you don't want them to miss it.

Thanks for the help guys!

I have always resisted .com's because there are just not enough hours in the day to chase them as well as .co.uk's but just couldn't let this one go :)

Summary

I think all the main points have been well covered in the replies, but I thought this summary might be handy (from the OpenSRS FAQs)

Q:How do I ensure successful transfers from Moniker Online Services?

A:Moniker Online Services LLC
url:Domain Names from Full Service Domain Name Registrar - moniker.com

You are transferring from Moniker. Here are some tips to help assure your transfer is successful

1) Domains are automatically locked by Moniker and must be “unlocked” or Moniker will not allow the transfer. Contact Moniker to unlock your domain.
url:http://www.moniker.com/contactus.html
2) Moniker will send their confirmation email to “AdminContactVariable”.
3) You will have 72 hours to approve the email that Moniker sends you.
4) For .com, .biz, .info or .org domains you must contact Moniker to obtain your “Authcode” for the domain (needed for transfer).

Thanks again for the help, it's all transferred now and in my name but it seemed to take for ever, I was worried he was going to back out :)

I think I'll get them pushed in future to an account with the same registrar then move them later, much quicker.
