time of a drop

Hi,

Is there is a particular system / order in which domains drop each day ?

Ie: say i have a 1500 domains for tomorrows drop - is there a way to determine a rough idea of what time / hour of the day a certain domain will drop ?

No. It's completely random, and assuming the domain drops on the day it should, can take place at any time between 00:00 and 23:59.

Some have hinted at a pattern to drop times, but in the few years I've been doing it, I've not found a reliable pattern.

Additionally, the domain will usually drop when you are looking the other way

I thought it was the alpha numerical conversion of the tag for the hour and the addition of the last change for the minute???

I've never noticed them drop between midnight and 4am. It also seems that the first daily action is the 'renewal required' domains are rolled over into 'suspended' before the drops start happening.

Talking to Nominet staff - I also get the impression that the queuing system can in fact run into the following day. I wondered whether this was due to some sort of manual check (delete conformation) that actually created the "anytime soon system"

I think the occasional one does, just to annoy drop catchers.

1 on my system list dropped around 3:30am today, I've often seen drops in the very early hours (even catching the odd one )

1. Convert domain name ASCII to hex.

E.g.:

domain.co.uk = 64 6f 6d 61 69 6e 2e 63 6f 2e 75 6b

2. Take first three 256-byte hex number = 64 6f 6d

3. Add decimal components = 6+4+6+6 = 22

4. Seed random number generator with 22 to generate a time from midnight.

5. Associate generated time with the domain for the drop.

6. Add domain to drop queue.

7. If conflicted, a domain from the original drop list, sorted ascending alpha with a time generated as above takes precedence, and add 32768 seconds to current domain.
