Tights.co.uk

Was looking at some websites that focus on tights and product often under a tenner yet the quality of websites, imagery, models, and product range is extraordinary. The image of the product must be perfection itself as the buyer has the most absolute critical eye. I mean we are talking about everything from work to one's love life to weddings all critical situations. This really is a cutthroat sector.

New owner probably feels they've bagged themselves a bargain. Seller should be over the moon in this economy.

It went for really good money :)

We've got gossard.uk and holdups.uk for sale to go with it if the buyer wants them ;)

I wonder if it will truly complete.. I was surprised that someone would be moronic enough to spend that and not buy the future with it.

When you involve multiple end users in an auction, prices aren't generally going to be as arbitrary as reseller prices. It's just that we don't often see end user sales these days. Probably always best to mailshot relevant companies beforehand (if the domain warrants it)

I can understand 1 person /company interested at this level. But how did it get bid up to this figure? Surely there are not 2 parties out there looking to spend £30k+ on tights.co.uk. Or am I missing something?

Lets look at this in business terms, £32k is a lot of money but for what it represent and in business terms, it's not, I have a friend with a shop of 1200 sq foot, in Thamesmead and he pays £30k per year and business rate is £6k plus. Tights .co.uk is high street equivalent in physical shop terms and if my friend shop is in Oxford street or Kensington high street or Regent street for example, the price will be around £100k + a year in rent and business rate will probably be another £40k/yr.

Tights .co.uk means, you can have more lines than a physical shop could hold, you can create more combination of products packages that you wont be able to do in a physical shop and you can sell beyond the reach of a physical shop too.

If I am a retailer selling tights today, I will be buying tights .co.uk as my next store to open, and £32k to buy and £10/yr to renew compare to cost of a shop yearly, its well worth it.
This is my opinion.

so did the owner / seller of the domain let someone else take the rights to Tights.uk looking at the reg date? crazy...

Nice to see a great sale for a generic though, it feels like it's been a while.

As mentioned, if the domain warrants it then it's often useful to let major players know in advance of an auction. If two or more sense the opportunity, then the fear of a major competitor capitalising on a category-killer domain can be a good incentive for a bidding war. To a large established end user £32k is quite justifiable, hence why more than one company was bidding at that level. Think Myla, Le Perla, Wolford, Agent Provocateur, Victoria Secret, Aubade, Calvin Klein, Chantelle, Coco de Mer, Stella McCartney... etc etc.

That's a very important point, and one that will be especially more pertinent in a recessionary post/Covid-19 climate. The High Street is an increasingly unattractive proposition for both businesses and consumers, and the domain aftermarket may see some direct benefit.

Unless the domain is getting a healthy amount of type-in traffic I don't think this analogy really works?

It's still going to require considerable investment to either compete in the serps or through social media advertising.

Personally, I'd have rather bought a more generic <insert superlative>tights.co.uk domain for reg fee and used thet £30k saving for link buying and fb ads.

With budgets in £10m+ .... £30k is better than a reg fee domain name.

Second biggish one this week - not sure if it has been made public or will be - but .co.uk gone for low £xxx, xxx in the last few days. Legit sale from UK domainer to end user (not me) via brokerage.

Good generics are worth money shocka

I can see that you are not in the business of selling Tights. :)

To fit a typical retail shop will cost another £20 to 50k this does not include product cost, just fixture and fittings, ask any retailer. The cost you paid for a domain name does not remove the cost of marketing your business, you might spend less as years goes by but marketing cost will always be there. You actually have more money for marketing since you don't have the yearly liability of physical locations.

Marketing to the ladies still require some effort and money regardless of the domain name. :D
