The clock is ticking for website owners to comply on cookies

I don't think they would need to. It's only businesses that are based/operate from within the EU. AFAIK they could even host here, use a .co.uk and still not have to comply.

Do you happen to be able to back that up? Interested. Thanks.

I read that it was irrelevant if a UK company hosted in the US - it was the fact they were based in the UK that mattered. Guessed the inverse would be that a US company wouldn't be required...even hosting in the UK. Could be wrong?! Can't remember where I read that though! I'll see if I can find it...

Cool thanks.

What gives with most of the UK affiliate networks? I'm assuming they are leaving it for publishers to worry about being compliant? After all its the affiliate/publisher that initiates the use of the cookie right?

What happens with the networks use of that data?

Its a minefield clusterfuck this whole thing.

And whats the deal with this civic UK plugin?? Does it archive the optin for proof later?

I've been taking a look at http://www.cookielaw.org/ - what a hassle. Going to look at this 'optanon' thing too.

This is what I got back from these people for one site!

LOL, I think not, they're having a laugh!

Many thanks for your interest in using Optanon to enable your website to become compliant with the cookie law.

Optanon is a cloud-based platform that delivers a visitor consent message to your site via a simple script that you add into your site.

Based on what you have told us about your site traffic levels, the cost of licensing and deploying Optanon on your website is:

£295 plus VAT per annum licence fee
£450 plus VAT one-off set up and deployment support charge

The set up charge includes:

Categorisation of your cookies into groups based on their type and function (where known)
Creating messaging to display to your site visitors
Providing support to your web team to add the Optanon code into your website.
Changes to your set up prior to the release of the Optanon Manager

The licence fee includes:

Your right to use the Optanon code to display a visitor consent message on your site
Your right to use the code to display an Optanon powered dynamic cookies policy page (coming soon).
From May 2012, access to the Optanon Manager to configure your own message and organisation of cookies
Automatic notification of new cookies found on your website.
Any future upgrades to the platform services and functionality.

I have also attached here a slide show which gives you an overview of our offering. If you would like to proceed or have any questions, please feel free to get in touch.

I tried using that civic cookie control on one of my wordpress sites, but it doesnt seem to work on the latest version, as all i got when loading the page was a white background and nothing else

I totally intend to ignore the whole thing. The ICO have much bigger things to worry about IMHO.

Typical EU rules cr*p again. If it aint broken just fix it and cause a whole load of hassle, and probably end up costing the tax payer more as there will need to be some quango organisations to set up as well.

hmm

hmmm..

60 sites of my own, plus many more client sites to update, and no idea what to do yet, crap. No idea what to tell the clients either.

I predict that in 5-10 years time the Internet won't be the fun, easy and free place it is now or has been. The bureaucrats will ruin it for people with websites and everyone that surfs it, with extra rules, regulations and hoops to jump through. They just can't help keeping their noses out anything, or not being able to control everything.
