Tablet advise

Cheers Sean

that's why i was choosing between them as they were on offer. went to the shops today and neither were in the shops which didn't help trying to test them. the Sony is only 300 now as well. so still not sure which one to get

Yea the good points back on the xoom tho is bigger screen more memory for the same price. but is heavier. what is the Sony like compared to the others. i don't think there will be much in it.

Was just looking on the websites and you can get good spec laptops for the same price.

Buying a laptop i have no problem with but a tablet is in the unknown

I've had an android tablet (vega from Currys) for about a year and I find it excellent, I've upgraded it to Android 3.2 and do geeky things like controlling my MythTV system from it. It is useful to use when on holiday to keep an eye on things, there's an SSH terminal app and a Windows RDP client so I can even manage the servers, although a laptop is still better if there's a lot to do.

If you are happy with the out the box experience, then I'd guess it doesn't make much difference whether you go Apple or Android, if you want more control over the device, then Android will give you much more flexibility. Hardware wise, the newer Androids are more visually pleasing then the older ones and not a lot between them.

When I got mine, the Android SDK was free, Apple needed a developers license and I didn't fancy trying to learn Objective C when I already hat a little Java experience.

I had Vega for about 3 months its a nice little tablet the only problem was poor viewing angles on the screen. Fine head on but drops off considerably lying on the couch etc. For a Sub £200 tablet you should definitely look at getting a HP touchpad on EBay and loading up CM9

Thanks everyone

I ended up buying the sumsung in the end, as the xoom was just to heavy for me.

The discount code TAB5 still works so i got it in the end for £265, not bad i think, can wait to get it tomorrow now

I wish I could tell you but.......

its being deliveried by yodel so prob wont turn up till next year.

I hate yodel more than i hate apple lol

Its good....

That is all.. haha

na it is really good I changed the launcher on it to get rid of samsungs touchwiz so it is just pure andriod and it is really quick, I love it.

Good to see you tweaking it already!

I used mine to stream an episode of Star Trek TNG from my MythTV server to the garden yesterday lunch time, how did we live without these things in the past :)

yea I couldnt help it, next job is doing the same to the phone, touchwiz slows everything done so i wanted full power out of it, think it helps with battery life also.

Well before i think we used to talk to people lol

It's funny because I never really wanted a tablet. Just couldn't see the point in them when I had iMac, MPB, iPhone.

But I think this thread got inside my subconscious and I started reading up on tablets. I ended up buying the cheaper one (Blackberry Playbook). $200 in US, it can handle Android apps that are ported (in BB World) or by sideloading many of the apps.

It's also smaller than iPad (which I like) - my wife has the iPad and I could never imagine taking it out in a Coffee shop to get some work done or to browse... weird but with the Playbook I can be productive on a bigger screen than the iPhone and the device seems more discrete and less 'show off' while whipping it out in public.

Although I actually wanted to buy a full Android OS device, I'm really happy with my choice - BB is still BB OS with some ability to run Android apps.

Anyways that's my take.

Thought i would bring this thread back, by asking some advice on a tablet.
I am seriously thinking of getting one now after always saying they were pointless, however one of the main things for me is SKY GO, to be able to watch it on a tablet while out is one of the main factors.
I am aware Sky Go is not on all android devices only some, i have been looking at the Sony S Tablet.
Just looking for a tablet that i can browse the web, take pics and watch Sky Go on.
Anyone have Sky Go on their tablets and can offer some advice please?

There are a lot of people waiting for this to become available on the Blackberry PB, me included. Apparently its on its way but Im not sure when :(
Its perfect for the web and has 2x cameras 5mp and 3mp so might be worth getting at the price it is and holding out for SkyGo

I was just looking into this yesterday, they haven't got it on many tablets at the moment, main android devices they are working on is Samsung and HTC, do a Google search for it, u will find out what its on, but its not on Sony, plus the Sony is abit laggy

Thanks, i do like the look of the Blackberry Playbook, does it have 3g? with it?

I have a Blackberry phone and do like Blackberry, i am just a web surfer, love instant email and use occasional apps so the playbook would be ideal, it's just the whole sky go thing.

At the moment it looks like its Apple winning, which is disappointing, particulary for my bank account!

Is there content on the Sky Go app that you can't get going to the Sky Go part of the Sky website using a browser?
