I was unaware of snooker being advertised elsewhere, but it’s not really surprising. As for price, I paid what I was willing to pay and it was less than I feel it was worth so I’m happy. Similarly for skate, I sold for what I was willing to sell for, so all in all happy with the outcome. :)

its a great name but in the end has the same problem all names like that have.

If you don't know what that problem is then anyone should twice before buying names like that (unless of course they were a bargain :) ) unless your going to revert to plan B which is, well..

btw, consitering how big the skate thing is I think people have seriously underestimated the value of such a domain.

Well done on the deal.

A few ideas...
- beginner's guide to snooker
- directory of snooker clubs around the UK
- reviews of key equipment
- summary of major annual tournaments (location, prize money, etc.)
- brief section about other cue sports (pool, billiards etc.)
- b2b section e.g. snooker clubs for sale, wholesale equipment, fittings/furnishings for clubs, etc.

How much did you "feel it was worth"?

Given that I'm intending to be the end user and I'm not planning on selling, the value I see is more in the developed site. I would hope that once developed a high £xx,xxx figure would not be unreasonable, but undeveloped I don't know, maybe half that to the right buyer?

Thanks for the suggestions, they're pretty much what I was thinking of starting with. I'm hoping to go into the eCommerce side of things too and I'm already talking with people who build tables etc to work on a commission basis. As for the database of clubs etc I'm already working on it and have a list of over 100 clubs.

There's naturally a focus on here to buy to sell. In this case both domains were purchased for the purpose of developing as a business. I acquired skate to set up a skatepark database and shop and there was no intention to sell, it just worked out that way and it was a pretty tough decision.

With snooker I was lucky in that I was in a position to buy when it became available. Having kept an eye on it for several years (I'm a big snooker fan), if the opportunity came along I'd always intended to buy to develop. The only real issue I see right now is time, but I'm not in any particular rush so I appreciate this is going to be a long-term project.

I'm quite surprised that the focus of this thread is more on snooker than skate. Skating/skateboarding etc is a big industry and although I feel snooker is the better domain, I don't think there's that much in it. Maybe it's because as undeveloped domains there is a difference and I'm considering more the revenues etc skate was making?

Thanks for the comments, I just hope I don't disappoint when developing :(

Call me a cheapskate but I would not have valued skate very highly as a name only. snooker on the other hand is the real McCoy.

As Alex knows skating, be it on a board, in-line or on rollerskates or any other flavour like scooter/bmx is a huge past-time for many many boys and girls. The money spent on new gear is in my opinion far far greater than the money spent on snooker as a past-time/hobby. Just look at the numbers of skate parks opening up everywhere, and no longer by ex-skaters, but by hard nosed business people.

If you were to put the 2 past-times up against each-other in terms of money spent/audience and expendable income per head. skate for me wins every time, weather or not that means a greater value domain name is another matter.

I can imagine the decision to sell it would have been a long and painful one.
Glad you got the name you wanted Alex! Good luck with it.

I also don't know why people are under-valuing skate.co.uk in comparison to snooker.

Skate is a really nice, premium domain which can also be branded around clothing, equipment, videos or a magazine site.

In addition, the skating industry seems to have far more potential and includes skate boarding, roller skating, roller blading, skate parks and ice skating. I'm sure you could also add wake-boarding and water skiing to this category too, plus there's potential to develop a skate tricks site.

Snooker on the other hand is a more generic domain built for a snooker news and information site.

Think about Tony Hawk's Pro Skater sales compared to Snooker video game sales.

Overall, great business done by Alex, but Skate.co.uk was a really nice domain too!

Edit: Just saw post above me. Spot on.

Wow how did Global Domain Names Ltd not buy this domain?

They own football.co.uk, cricket.co.uk, golf.co.uk, netball.co.uk, tennis.co.uk, boxing.co.uk, cycling.co.uk and darts.co.uk.

Must be an EASY flip down the line when they really want it Alex.

Sweet name... Develop it in phases, and get each new phase generating an income. Lots of potential - good luck with it.
