I sold domain on Sedo. The buyer has transferred domain on to his name, but he chose to leave it on my tag.

When I asked Sedo for the money ( 3 times), they refused to pay me.

So the buyer can use the domain the way they like, but I can’t get the money. Sedo is known for employing clueless students. There are few good people at Sedo, but most of the admin staff are idiots.

Why I am saying this here -because I have fed up being nice and educating sedo’s stupid students.

Similar experience anyone?

I still have a quite a few domains I sold through Sedo on my TAG (which is a pain in itself as I always end up having to contact the new owners about renewal), however never had a payment withheld for this reason.

Stephen.

It happened to me once.
I threatened to DRS the new owner for failing to pay for the name and within 24hrs sedo paid up :D

Come on Sedo - pay him the money and pay him now!

Not being funny but this is the sign of a company in trouble, if this was a bank what would you be thinking? It's happening more and more every day.

Wonder if Sedo are about to go the way of the recent affiliates.

Hopefully that isn't true - but it seems that Sedo / Domcollect / 1&1 just don't understand public relations.

Stephen.

O its not only me.

Obviously it’s down to the buyer to choose which tag he wants to keep domain on. Registrant’s and Registrar’s rights and responsibilities are clearly defined by Nominet. Because Sedo considering them selfs being “the market place” they should know better. How long I will have to educate sedo’s staff how to do their job!

Yes mate and with Domcollect trying to dump their stock recently, the signs could be grim.

A company could be using money from later sale to pay of earlier ones, not a bad system but like any pyramid scheme, nearly always runs out eventually.

If Sedo would be using money held in escrow accounts to cover its commitments then that would be big trouble. It’s hard to imagine. Sodo is subsidiary of listed company I don’t think its the case.

Sedo too big, we need more niche, slick, efficient professional operators. I believe it was about 2005 when I suggested that parking income money could be used for domain name purchases. They said yes yes yes. But sill, they haven’t implemented it. The fact that it’s hard to get paid with the currency that you sell your domain for shows that they are slow to do anything.

I think sedo has rested on its laurels for too long. Simple things like paying you your money on time really matter. If the domain has been transferred into the buyer's name then the deal has been done and you are owed your money. You're the one now being inconvenienced because a tardy buyer can't be bothered to put the domain on the right tag.

Perhaps sedo need to introduce a new paragraph into the sales t&c's for .uk sales.

i.e. "it is the buyer's responsibility to change the nominet tag to obtain control of the domain. The buyer should choose a tag where he/she has an existing account (and they should take steps to transfer that domain onto this existing account). If the buyer chooses the same tag as the seller then the seller is not responsible if the domain expires at renewal. The domain transfer is deemed complete when the domain has been transferred into the buyer's name and the monies will be released to the seller. The tag change and choice of tag is entirely the buyer's responsibility and is outside the control of the seller".

I say this as we have had occasions when we have been paid our money by Sedo but left chasing the buyer as he has chosen the same tag as us i.e. fasthosts and we then have to undergo the process of getting it transferred internally into his account. So the domain can sit in our fasthosts account even though we are no longer the owner. If this little clause was put in then it would protect Sedo sellers if they wanted to let the domain lapse at renewal. I always hate it when a buyer chooses the same tag. Perhaps Sedo could set up a temporary Sedo tag that domains get transferred to - at least they would be away from our own registrar or tag.

I sold one recently on Sedo which was also transferred into the new registrants name, however left on my tag. Sedo sent payment the following day...

Seems a bit odd that they would refuse payment when the domain has clearly changed hands.

They paid me even thought a domain was left on my tag, so nice to see their consistent. not.

Bunch of muppets.

Thank you for your feedback Nigel I have passed your suggestion on.

Max - I apologise for your transfer issue. I have reported this to the transfer manager and will endeavor to get your payment to you as soon as possible.

In future if anyone is experiencing a problem with a transfer please give us a call in the London office.

regards

Joanna

Thanks for acting on this Joanna. Let's hope some good results from this thread.

Kind regards

Nigel

Now I got the response from Sedo, Dave Thomas gave a call. They are looking in to where things have gone wrong in this case. Dave promised that it will get sorted. He is new at Sedo and very nice guy. Had pleasure meeting him.

I hope Sedo will do something so this will be avoided in the future.

Domain is the responsibly of its registrant not the registrar.

Cheers
Max

Sedo

As Max said right at the beginning of the thread, not every at Sedo works in this manner. The guys in the London office "Hugo & Dave" are nothing but helpful and true assets to the company, on many occasions they have helped me execute transactions, and if any issues arise they communicate direct with the guys in Germany rather than me chasing...

If the problem persists i would suggest speaking to Dave or Hugo, obviously there is an underlying problem with the way some transactions are dealt with but for the meantime the guys in london are a good place to start when having such issues.

Nothing worse than selling something and not getting paid for it on time, very frustrating to say the least.

Regards,
Barry
