It's not all about the exacts ... which one do you think is better for marketing purposes? MoneyOffCode.co.uk or PromotionCodes.co.uk?

 "Get Money Off with MoneyOffCode.co.uk"

"Save Money at MoneyOffCode.co.uk"

"Never pay full price with MoneyOffCode.co.uk"

"I saved a load with MoneyOffCode ... .co.uk"

Am I getting carried away? Keep the faith.

Accelerator > I think yours is much better suited, we bang on about generics and there's no prizes for guessing what money off codes does but promotion codes could be a few things.

And Wigwam no it's not all about exacts, an end user with a nice marketing budget would go PPC or similar.

Every time I have bought an item, I just google "retailer voucher code" or 'retailer promotion code' I never go direct to any and I doubt many do :) Hence why I think the search volume is important.

I would have thought PromotionalCodes would be the better term but it also shows they must be making good revs from these types of sites still.

I have a few including CouponsCodes.co.uk but to develop a site is hard work with such strong competition.

Generally, I prefer when these types of websites have more than 1 promo code :). Therefore, in this case, plural names are much more valuable than a singular like "moneyoffcode.co.uk". If you had the plural in this case, then yes it might be a domain worth something.

I think this is a fair sale, decent price for both parties.

I don't think promotioncodes.co.uk for £9k was a good deal for the buyer at all.

Its not very brandable, and the exact match traffic doesn't warrant that price. I paid significantly less for discountvouchers.org which is a better domain in my opinion. On this line of thought, I think promocodes.co.uk massively overpaid too.

i tend to agree with the frog :) , (btw, i like your location :p)

i would prefer a cracking brandable, or 2 word brandable without paying over odds
then just do lots of hard work, building feeder sites and links etc on cheap handregges

plus i would always go for a .com for this type of site
why limit yourself

let's face to it, for a site like to work well, you have to go for it, and make it your main site to work with

I think the problem with a .com (assuming you mean to target USA traffic too) is Americans would be more likely to use the word "coupons" so it would be hard to get one that fitted both markets.

On the related domain of promocodes.co.uk, I can't help but think they drastically overpaid - "promo codes" is only getting 3,600 searches a month according to Google, so certainly not enough to warrant the $30k price tag. I would question whether it was worth it from branding with a lot of similar urls already established, and "promo" being a shortened word as well.

With "discount vouchers" getting 60,000 searches according to Google, 2 people either massively overpaid, or someone got an absolute bargain (edit - assuming you don't value the .co.uk extension a lot more, which in this situation I don't) -

discountvouchers.org -60,000 searches - $2100
promocodes.co.uk - 3,600 searches - $30,000
promotioncodes.co.uk - 4,400 searches - $14,000

I think in that niche, at north of $10k I'd rather buy a brandable domain and spend the rest promoting it. Unless of course your budget for the project is 400-500k off the bat and 14k is a drop in the ocean :D

Its far from ideal starting a project with Google recommending that anyone looking for your site should go visit a competitor instead:

Either way, I'll keep an eye on the site - always of interest when a domain changes hands for a reasonable amount of money in a niche I have an interest in. Promocodes.co.uk already has a nice looking site on it.

When I type in promotioncodes.co.uk into Google I get:

Did you mean: promotioncodes.me.uk

... anyway, I don't feel it's a big issue, as I don't feel people would type in the url into Google that often. You won't get a suggestion if you just type the keyphrase "promotion codes".
