Secret underground city

Secret Underground Bunker

I've head a lot of rubbish spouted about Rudloe Manor. Prior to leaving the services, I was stationed there and worked underground in communications.
The place could be used by Government and VIP's during the Cold War as a haven/Command & Control Centre. The complex however was used as a communications relay station during my time. It was neccessary to site most communications centres underground so that it would still be operational in event of war.
Box tunnel was connected to the facility mainly for use during WW2 as it was an ammunition storage depot. There is also an "Underground Lake" there (water storage facility).

Other military units around the district were all connected to the same set of tunnels which stretched for many miles. Ventilation shafts and emergency exits were at various strategic locations. The ventilation shafts had very large fans which were needed to keep the place dry (it was a very damp place). We used to have practice evacuations on a regular basis during which we would all troop down one of the tunnels in the Bath direction & surface a bit further down the hill through one of the "apparently unused & derelict" Exits. As the majority of the tunnels were old Bath Stone quarries it was always an experience doing an emergency exit. The complex's depth varies considerably but a lot of it was approximately 70ft below the surface with limestone & granite above you. A lot of people wore Radon Gas monitors because of the Granite (& no other reason).

The place was my last tour of duty before I came out (I worked for HQ Fixed Telecommunications Service and 1 Signals Unit).

Hope that this clears up some of the myths that have abounded.

There are a lot of underground secrets, ranging from disused leftovers to existing secret installations.

There are a few places designed as resistance bases in case Hitler actually invaded, and there's a place I know about that would result in a visit from the "funny people" if I discussed it here ...

But what I wanted to mention was the renovation of a public toilet in London. There was a bloke who noticed that "renovations" to this underground toilet were taking a very long time (months).

He wrote a series of letters about it that were published in the New Scientist, pointing out that every day a procession of workmen were going into the place, and that it must be very crowded to work in there.
He was also worried about being followed after a couple of his letters had been published. After a long time, the toilet was re-opened, and visitors reported that it looked like nothing much had been done.

I once employed a couple of joiners like that ...

good post! go on, pm me 'the place you know about' ;)

We had a place like this near where I grew up. Well, nobody knew for sure, but the older residents all talked about it being built in the 50's. I expect there are a lot of them about.
