I think from what I remember of sealed bids in house purchases, the envelopes remains sealed (albeit with a solicitor usually) until the end date (which is firm, not within x minute window) and then disclosed. I'm in favour of this, rather than knowing specifically what the best price is, as ultimately that doesn't matter until the end and shouldn't be used to influence other bids. Seller still needs to be aware of how many bids have been placed during.
