reports.uk (750 GBP)

They were caught by two different tags on the 18th December, so is a sensible strategy for them to be sold at a similar time. Has seen the .uk overtake the .co.uk on a few occasions now, such is the added pressure to buy both. It could be that because the times were so close, it resulted in two bidders fighting for both extensions, which is only a good thing for the sellers. Congrats to them.

Indeed Ian; as you say, it could be. Congrats for sure.

Indeed, I didn't think this strategy would work too well, but proof is in the pudding.

Am I missing something here or just being daft? I see these both ended at the same time. Isn't that a coincidence given that DL requires the .uk/.co.uk to be sold as one lot? Get my drift?

If the .co.uk and .uk pair are owned by the same person then yes that is the case, but when they are split they can be sold individually. It's very common for owners of the split pair to end the auctions on the same date or in this case the same time. IMO it makes sense, both for the benefit of the bidders and the sellers, often people will only bid if they can acquire both.

DL doesn't required you to sell the pair.

The owner of .uk either put it up for sale after .co.uk was listed and set it at the same time or both domain owners agreed to auction for same time as this was likely to get the best price for both.

Other way around, I put the .uk up first and sent the other Alistair a PM to let him know.

It is unusual for the .uk to sell for more than the .co.uk, however assuming it's the same person who has won both i think the overall price for the pair is very good. Had they been owned by the one person and auctioned as a pair I think the price could have been quite a bit higher.

I do know all of this - thanks. When I say "get my drift", I'm suggesting that this has to be an easy way to get the pair on DL separately if you own them and have an accommodating friend. Geddit?

I don't really see much benefit in that, I think most auctions would fare better if sold together, or at least it's too risky a strategy IMO. And besides if somebody was to do that they would have to transfer either one of the .co.uk/.uk domains to their accommodating friend.. I'm almost certain somebody would spot the WHOIS change, most decent domains are under a constant spotlight by domainers!

Denys is pretty hot on tag changes; I reckon he'd spot that happening, nor would I trust the gamble to pay off in most cases.

If you flip catches on DL then you can only really expect eyeballs from a certain market (and a certain price ). If you need to cover catch fees then this might be understandable, but if it's worth 750 today, what about in 3 or 5 years time..

It's a viable approach though to flip to resellers immediately rather than wait; it depends on the domain. Some also have split catch agreements. Many routes to market.

Shouldn't this topic have its own thread?

I'm sure its been discussed many times before, the merits of flipping vs holding, but I can't remember one recently and now of course we have the .UK to add an extra element

I think there are few merits to flipping really.. certainly anything decent. Doing the donkey work for someone else to make a handsome profit off the back of your hard work down the line.. for what works out to be the minimum wage, but if you enjoy working in a digital coal mine no problem. I used to do it myself for years, so I know its easy done.

I caught the .co.uk. I don't catch hardly anything, but then I hardly load anything.

I'm not a "domainer", although I am a Nominet member but I have virtually zero interest in buying domains to sell on. I only put it on domainlore because the other Alistair let me know that's what he was doing otherwise I would have just sat on it until I eventually got around to just thinking about it.

Sticking it on domainlore was the easy option, yeah. Whack it on there, hopefully make a few quid and job done.

I didn't put any effort in, or do any donkey work. I just happened to catch the domain. If somebody else wants to put the effort in and do the donkey work to sell it on for an obscene profit then good luck to them, but I have zero interest in doing any of that.
