Hi All,

Well I guess a good few of you know I've had enough and I'm getting out of domaining to work on and to raise big funds for my eco projects, however although I've a sizeable portfolio to sell (site being built) I've had a major fall out with my biggest isp and I have several hundred detagged names.

Normally these would be retagged/allocated to another isp but because I've been given some help by Nominet and because I have so many, and because when I do the math at a nominet fiver plus vat for renewals against whats out there I could actually save money. It might be I should become a tag holder myself (and) I'm sure as hell I'll be able to manage my names better than the service I've had in the last 10 years.

Plus there could be the chance to catch some good ones to invest in or keep - Anyone any fill me in on why ideas??

I suppose it depends if the savings you make on renewals outweigh the initial £600 outlay and the £100 a year after that.

Another option, becoming a tagholder is free, you only pay to become a member. You could get your own TAG, when domains need renewing move them to whatever registrar, renew them and then move them back to your TAG

Grant I thought the intitial outlay was £400 + the £100 per year?

But this sounds a bit interesting as I've been left trawling through almost a thousand names and while 99% have recently been paid for and (although detagged) have year plus or nearly 2 years to run - There are some that should have been renewed in March!!

Not quite sure what your saying here; alright so I can get my own tag for nothing/zero/nada (did NOT realise that) then find the ones that need renewed, then tag them at (lets say easyspace) renew those ones at their price and then transfer them back to my tag for free and I save on the intitial/upfront £400+100, or 600+100 - whatever it is??

Eureka: Oh I see what you mean - although I'm losing around 3 quid per name but your offsetting that against the 500 or 600 hundred quid outlay - Hmmm...

Good thinking that man, however what if the amount of names you need to renew, or 'renew soon' may mean a couple of hundred quid saving instantly and you/I might want to try my hand at standing a chance of catching a select amount of good names for investment, elthough I bleive that is dependent on someone writing a pretty good epp script??

Please dont get me wrong - I HAVE NO BLOODY INTEREST in getting back into this ****** business again!!

I just want to be a guy who brought new eco prodcuts to a cash strapped Britain (and) still dabbled in something that has becone a very bad habit - cause bad habits are hard to let go :)

Could be yes, so your first year would be a £500 outlay.

Eureka: Oh I see - renew then at about £8 (my reseller cost)

Indeed, or move them somewhere thats offering them at virtually cost price or maybe even less then move them back after renewing.

In that scenario you would need membership, especially if you want to run your own catching system.

Getting a tag is free.

Its simple really.

1 - put all names on your tag

2 - at renewal time, move them to whoever is cheapest/most trustworthy etc

3 - renew them at the £6 it costs

4 - move back to your tag.

Arent all non-members already doing this?

Quite so. I alluded to this in another post on a similar subject but you're spot on.

Obviously not, I toyed with the member idea for years but couldn't afford the time to get involved with other things going on. Now when I'm offloading I thought tag = membership and that could/would give me the opp to catch some good ones for a mid-to-long-term hold, plus in the meantime I'd be more able to manage my names as they were sold off.

Now I'm thinking tomorrow I 'll have my own tag and play it this way and maybe get Dale or others to catch me the ones I want - thanks all!!

Send them on over. Needs to be structured a little first. Easy to do though.

Will try over the next few days "when" I can find some time. If you can give me some ideas no how to approach Nominet with the tag but no member script that would be great - by pm if you prefer.

btw: great job with dombidz, didnt recognise it at first -really good job...

I can open up a specific account on a 'bill customer' basis. You'll have to ask me to effect all transactions though. It's a big trust thing. Happyto help though :)
