Thanks for the comments... the landlord doesn't want the house as registered office in case things go wrong and people start poking around, which I can understand. As for my parents' house I will double check, but I was told the mortgage terms express that the house cannot be used as a registered office.

I'll keep looking at names and see what I come up with. I totally agree about doing it myself and may just go for a registered office service similar to UKPLC's service.

if you can do those diploams and courses you have just done you can setup a limited company

i've done 2. 20 minutes and £20 application fee is what it'll cost you
google and you will find sample/example forms needed
also other forms on companies house site itself

why bother with hell of ltd company at this early stage?

All these £50 diy company formations are doing is forming a company in their name and then change it to yours all in the same day, that said it does the job and perhaps you want to save £££+ solicitor fees etc.

One bit of advice I would offer is consider how many shares you start with - I would reccommend at least 100.
 
All my domains bar about 10 have always been in my personal name. It wasn't until 2 things happened last year that made me change my mind on Limited companies.

1) The amount of paperwork needed to be filed to companies house or fines will be added

and

2) I got someone trying to negotiate with me on a domain name after he looked at my company financial records. He said "you are doing x amount per year, and you made x amount this year." Then started to try and haggle with this information.

So now gone / going back to being self employed sole trader, much less hassle and if negotiating much better keeping cards close to chest.
 
Thanks for the advice. I don't intend to transfer any domains to the company that I plan to sell. Over the past few years I've collected a handful of skate related generics for the sole purpose of advertising the shop and have saved together a considerable amount to get set up online and possibly open a shop in my local town. I've been trading for about 6 years, so it’s not really the early stages of the business and I’ve done loads of market research through selling in shops that friends own and through eBay, Amazon etc, so now I have one year left at uni I'm trying to get things going. Many suppliers only deal with limited companies and for the sake of loans and the results of conversations with my account manager this seems the way forward. I really appreciate the help and advice, but I'm fixed with my decision of registering and intend to get things going soon. The initial problem was not setting up the company as I’ve been studying the ins and outs for the past year, it was literally that I don’t have anywhere to use as the registered office so was seeing if anyone used any reasonable services.
 
The clauses in tenancy agreements, mortage, deads etc refer to using the property for it's sole intended purpose - which is residential use.

They're in to deter people from, lets say, opening a restaurant in their living room.

In effect, running a business from the property.

Sorry, just saw your post. I haven't seen the terms of my parents' mortgage agreement myself, I'm just going on what I've been told. If the term states something along the lines of 'not allowed to conduct business' would you say that this means no physical trading, such as restaurant, but a registered office is okay? As for the house I'm renting, I've had it confirmed that a registered office is not permitted.
 
A registered office is, in effect, just an adress where CHouse, HMRC etc send official company mail.

Also, working from home.. as millions of people now do, doesn't constitute running a business from home.

This is also true if you're working from home, as the sole employee, of a company of which you're the sole director who's registered adress is your home adress.

Your landlord may, quite rightly, have concerns that if you go tits up, owing loads of money, people may start turning up at the property and harrassing his next tennants. Which is fair enough, I just wouldn't have told him.

I'd love to see those property ads in the paper... NO SMOKERS, NO PETS, NO DSS, NO COMPANY DIRECTORS....

Haha, that would be amusing. I've asked my Dad to check the agreement as he told me that the agreement prevented using the house as a registered office. He will check it out and if it's the case that the house can be used then that's my problem solved.
 
Didn't there used to be a rule that if you ran a limited company you had to have a sign on your registered company address? Wouldn't that of meant you would have to have a sign on your house? I may of dreamt that tho' :-?
