Recent site recovery - hope it lasts

They wont earn any money if their search results are poor because people will stop using them.

But they won't though will they, Joe Public are the users and they haven't got a clue, how would they subjectively measure whether the results were "good" or "bad".

I doubt they've even noticed.

The only people who are suffering are website owners, and they are of course the ones who'll have to pay via Adwords to get their sites showing, website owners can't "stop using Google" because Google is where all of the customers are.

How do you think search engines work? they have to measure what they think is good and bad to be able to return ordered results and rank sites.

They continually roll out algorithms to try and filter sites with the "bad" features.

As a user I'm always impressed by google being able to return what I'm looking for, even when I don't know what exactly to type in to search when doing so sometimes.
