I don't intend to take on the big G, luckily - not directly, in a different form.

I'm looking at a sort of search engine, with a twist, and the basic model is that this "twisted search engine" is a ad-free results page version of google. How do I make my profit? Sites pay to be featured on the results page & voters choose what position they come, by voting sites up & down... un-featured sites would also be able to be voted up.

You search for a word (eg: car), and you get results in the way that you can
check out the top comparison websites chosen by voters & featuring a like (each keyword would have a amount to feature, and featuring would simply add you to the list for 3 months, and be around £10-£200, but rising way higher. The main part is the voting though, so quality results that visitors want to get, they can get. I'm really interested in the idea because I think this "twist", is different because its better for the consumer because its advert free, and when they use it of choice, they get what it says on the tin: comparison sites. Google, on the other hand, delivers retailers, blogs, comparison sites, etc - if the user just wants to compare laptops, they can do it and have access immediately to the "best" laptop comparison site available - I'd use it if I wanted to compare something, and the ad-free is just an extra incentive. I have a reasonable ability to invest, but I have very little knowledge in this area (I have many affiliate sites doing me justice, but alas I have never entered the world of databases and fancy scripts like this before),

.....

I'd love to know all your thoughts, hate, love, and maybe any quotes.

Why would a business choose to advertise on your site instead of spend their money on AdWords, where they know they are going to get traffic?

I don't want to be totally dismissive, but I think you are being very unrealistic indeed in terms of attempting to compete with the World's leading search engine, which after all is a multi-billion dollar company with thousands of the world's smartest minds working for them.

If I were you, I would go back to the drawing board, and think about a highly-targeted niche where you have a chance of coming up with a USP to sell to businesses.

Another good way to start is to find a white label solution where you will have minimal development costs, e.g. the white label running on this mobile deals site, and then practice your marketing skills on that.

The idea is for the site to get traffic, and searchs, and build from that. For free sites can see results - IE, to start of with, sites are on for free, and £10 is hardly a draw back from the results the first sites to "advertise" would get over the results they had before - inspiring them to pay in more. The balance would eventually brake even, but every time someone opts out, everyone else and any new guy can get traffic that the opt outer left around.

With a large market for comparison sites (I'd generally say your average joe is interested in comparison sites more then, say, amazon and its short descriptions, doing a poll & questionnaire soon), the visits without being "featured" would add up, and, improving those for a £10 would probably be worth all the extra targeted costumers - and you dont get much more targeted then someone looking for detailed reviews/comparisons on a product.

I do think its a most risky investment yes, but thanks also for the link - and idea of testing - it could come in a lot of use - this thread was indeed originally started for the purpose of gaining knowledge. Can anyone recommend a ajax scripting firm, for this job, or share any other knowledge around this area? Really interested in proceeding if polls & questionnaire shed a green light.

Are you able to reply without linking to one of your sites?

You may notice that in the last paragraph of his reply to me, the OP has specifically thanked me for this link. I used it to illustrate a point about whitelabels which the OP may not be familiar with.
