Wanted: Domain Appraisal Quit.co.uk

I think it is a fantastic domain. Short, brandable, radio test, meaningful to the niche you should push it in (ecigs) I would pay into ££££ for it no problem at all.

Although i am not as clued up as most on the .UK situation, surely it is not just going to come in and take over the whole established .co.uk market. I just cant see that happening, do not get me wrong i will definitely be trying for my premium domains .uk but mainly for protection and just in case. I still believe it is that good a domain that you will have a huge early advantage and the fact a charity has the .org.uk that will probably get the .uk to me only strengthens your domain. You will probably get your target audience with type in traffic looking for the charity website and getting your ecigs. I would love to develop this domain.

Good luck!

I reckon he just forgot to renew it.

When you leave renewing domains to the last moment, like myself, it happens occasionally. Happened to me before, although with a much less important name – in that instance it was an alcohol induced f-up.

Lovely catch. I'd be very surprised if it didn't do low four-figures+ on DL.

Sounds to me as if you're more "clued up" than you think. Very good post. All salient points covered. Comment directly relevant to the OP's domain. Rep added.

I wouldn't let it go for less than five figures. .com version owned by GSK.

As someone who is very interested in this domain, I would value it at around £2-£5k but I am obviously waiting for the results of .uk announcement in September or whenever it is. At this moment in time, I wouldn't pay more than £1k for it.

Nice name. 4 figures minimum! I can't believe A Hugh let this one drop.

If i were you I would hold on to it until after the ecig market has been subject to Government licencing, you might well be sitting on a corker, whether or not the .uk rolls out.

This is my point exactly... its a great domain but its only worth a fraction of what it could be unless you can pair it to the .uk

I think if someone were to buy it now, it would be a speculative gamble on .uk being cancelled altogether, or .uk given to .co.uk owners regardless of age.

A lot / most of the people on here seem to be saying .uk is definitely going to take over as the main extension... if thats the case then .co.uk's in 2015 are going to be like .org.uk's in 2010 - the clear 2nd best extension.

So how much is quit.org.uk worth? imho thats never even a 4 figure domain, and if things go the way people are predicting here, quit.co.uk will follow suit.

Personally I would get rid of it asap if I'd caught it today, as I think v2 of .uk is going to go ahead as it is. The only other option for me would be to hold onto it, and make a deal with the charity who owns the .org.uk to sell quit.co.uk/.uk as a pair and keep half each?

I didn't read the thread all the way through but I assumed that the chap who mentioned it not being renewed because of .uk was saying so tongue in cheek. I think like others that Andy just made a mistake and it does happen to all of us unfortunately.

Yeah I just assumed that was a joke too.

Easy to say with hindsight... but why is someone seemingly letting domains go right to expiry before attempting to renew them? What do you gain with that... why not just renew them a month before they expire?

It is a sales technique. People watch x domain expire and then wait out the 92 days, they begin to get excited, perhaps make plans for the domain etc, thinking that by this time tomorrow the chances are they will own it. When that doesn't happen, and faced with disappointment, they often approach the registrant of x domain with a view to buying it.

I would be surprised if that was the case for most people. Surely they would realise 'quit' or a similar one word is going to be chased by every catcher... so the chance of them winning it is minimal at best.

I can't see anyone making any real plans based on the 1 in xxx chance of catching it. And if they did, then deciding to spend £xxxx rather than the £7 reg fee to buy it anyway.

The risk/reward just doesn't seem there - you're not likely to gain much from trying it... but get hit by a bus and taken to hospital overnight and you're going to lose the domain completely. Why bother risking it?

It does work.

In most cases, people don't understand that their chances of registering it are extremely limited. I do see your point about one-worders such as quit, but this is a method he and others use for all domains in their portfolio, the good the bad and the ugly, a percentage of which would likely not be caught if they they were to drop.

You'd be surprised mate, on renewals at the last day some people do contact you just after. People will wait that 2-3 weeks rather than contact you and pay £50. Now whether they would have contacted you 30 days before if you had renewed 30 days before, there is no way of telling I guess.

I imagine it might work with low value names as people go through drop lists and get ideas. Top value names, I can't see it working (maybe wrong) to be honest and you'd be better just renewing early in my opinion and keeping the domains live rather than suspended.

Thank you all very much for your helpful ideas,
you have given me a lot to think about.

i am grateful to all who have imputed in this thread and the time you have taken to do so

i will take all your comments on board when deciding the next step to take.

All the best
John

It does work.

Agreed. I often get a flurry of purchase inquiries immediately after renewing a large batch of domains.

To date, I've never deliberately dangled the baited hook in front of drop-list watchers in this fashion with .CO.UK. Not comfortable enough with Nominet to play chicken.

Like the recruitment angle mentioned by someone earlier but logical use is quit smoking.
