Question about Domain Lore

My brain is going to explode.

So some domainers CAN get free transfers, if they have a self managed tag, in which case changing the IPS tag via Godaddy support is a perfectly acceptable way of transfering domain ownership.

So the DomainLore buyer who provided his tag CAN get a free transfer afterall, and a moment ago when I sent an email apologising for wasting three days of his time I wasn't actually wasting his time, and now I look like a complete idiot because an hour after sending him confirmation that the TAG has been changed I've stuck his email address through nominet to initiate a transfer.

They have made UK domains WAY too complicated.

If its his own TAG yes he can do it free with fasthosts I've no idea what's he's doing

The DomainLore buyer who provided a tag I suspect has his own tag, like you.

The fasthosts buyer was acting on instruction of fasthosts, and is an end user. I suspect that they thought he wanted to transfer a domain he already owns to his fasthost account.

I'll contact the second buyer and inform them of this.

The first buyer probably thinks I'm a complete moron now, as I've changed his tag AND just initiated a nominet transfer. Presumably he will now just choose which route to go down, but it has been 4 days since he paid so I'm feel like I've just wasted his time for something which should have taken a matter of minutes.

I'll apologise again to him when the domain is in his possession, hopefully he'll be understanding (at least you can't get negative feedback on DL!).

On top of what others have said Domain Lore rules stipulate the buyer pays all transfer fees (if needed) anyway. Bidders must know this when bidding on a DL auction.

Thanks, that's good to know, that settles that one then!

It can be a little messy, especially when selling to end-users that generally don't have a clue of the process, nor who Nominet are and why they have to create an account etc. Equally, as a self-managed tag, you can change all the details for them, but still require their email address, and again, this causes confusion if they are unsure what this should be and how they then manage the domain. At the same time, I've had instances where I've initiated a transfer via Nominet, they have changed all the details, but left on my tag, which cannot support too many third party names, again, very messy.

These days I tend to do a tag change to another domainer/tag holder, or a Nominet transfer to anyone else, stipulating that it must be removed from my tag.

Your safest bet (and therefore what you should default to) is always to do a transfer via Nominet. That's the only way a domain transfer will actually work for any "end user" buyer, and for anyone who doesn't have both their own tag AND a Nominet account of the right type to be able to make registrant changes directly at Nominet despite not being the current registrant. If your buyer has that ability, I'm sure they'll come forward and tell you, but 99%+ of the time they won't.

NOTE: because many buyers, especially if they're used to the .com world, may only ever have experienced "push" style transfers (e.g. Godaddy account to Godaddy account) they may think they're helping you by telling what they want you to do, but more than likely they're just muddled up.

Thanks Edwin.

In future every transaction via Nominet.

Domain Lore = buyer pays.

End User = I pay, price accordingly.

Simple :)
