Although it wasn't Alistair Darling who handed over the disk to the courier, it was a department under his control, can MP's only be found culpable if they are involved in an incident in the 1st person, if this is the case then they will never be responsible for anything that goes wrong in their departments.

Not knowing the full details of what happened, we can really say for sure who is to blame. However, my point is that if 1 person can do something wrong and as a result get the MP in charge of that department the sack, then all it takes is for a Conservative supporting civil servant to 'take a hit for the team' and do something wrong to cause Labour a headache!

What they should be judged on is whether it could have been prevented, and how they deal with the problem once it has been brought to their attention. In this case the rules where there but had been broken by the member of staff. Perhaps there should be extra safeguards in place to prevent the copies being made in the first place, but without knowing how the data is used it is impossible to have any fair and unbiased view on that.

Never could understand the logic of ministers being made heads of departments in areas in which they probably have little knowledge or experience. One week they're looking after transport the next the economy, wouldn't it make more sense to elect people with real world business experience in the relevant area to the position.

Agree with that totally, which is why they rely so much on the civil service staff in their departments to keep things running correctly.

"The entire database of UK Identity Cards is due to be lost an Underground train within 3 months of the new ID Cards being introduced.

This prophecy, which is highly damaging to the Government and the country as a whole, has been made by Southend's foremost clairvoyant, Count d' Tealeaves.

He claims to have seen a pinstripe-suited, semi-balding man in his early thirties board a District Line train at Westminster, with an MOD surplus laptop containing the data and a rolled umbrella. His attention was diverted by a buxom woman of Eastern European appearance, believed to be Russian, whose male accomplice swiped the laptop and made off with it.

Initial reaction from the police was that citizens should not panic as there was no certainty that the data had fallen into the wrong hands, even though the male accomplice was reported to have been wearing a KGB sweat shirt.

However, within a week every UK citizen had their bank accounts emptied out and by using the data in conjunction with the contents of freely available Home Information Packs, the thieves were also able to re-register 40 million homes into their own names.

Home Secretary Jacqui Smith whose department issued the cards, Secretary of State Peter Hain who energetically campaigned for them and Ruth Kelly who was responsible for the introduction of Home Information Packs during her term as Local Government Minster could not be contacted for comment.

It is thought they obtained Russian passports and went to live under assumed names in South America

The government was facing an embarrassing climbdown last night as it emerged a shocking lapse in security in which two computer discs with 25 million people's personal details on them were lost in the post, was merely a plotline for the new series of stalwart British sit-com Blackadder.

Ben Elton and Richard Curtis penned the pilot episode for the upcoming Blackadder 5 - The Corridors of Power some time ago, but misplaced the final draft in a pub near Whitehall.

The new series of the popular historical satire is the first for nearly twenty years, and sees the habitually put-upon and inept Kevin Darling - last seen as a snivelling desk jockey in the seminal World War 1 comedy Blackadder Goes Forth - promoted to Chancellor of the Exchequer.

Curtis confirmed they were inspired to write the episode by Alistair Darling's real-life appointment to the post, but denied any responsibility for the fiasco. "I'm sorry the public has been misled," he said. "But frankly I had no idea that our absurd and farcical scenario could ever be misconstrued as an actual ministerial blunder. I mean they can't be that stupid. Can they?"

A government statement admitted errors had been made. "We thought the script was a leaked memo from a junior Treasury Minister. I guess we just saw the name Darling and panicked. Admittedly, with the benefit of hindsight, it seemed unusual that the nefarious postal courier who misplaced the vital CDs was being played by Brian Blessed, but we thought transparency was best and urged the Chancellor to confess all."

The writers said that most of the original cast members would return in the eagerly-awaited new series. Rowan Atkinson, the eponymous hero, plays a cynical, scheming spin doctor for the country's gruff new Prime Minister (an understated and dour Stephen Fry), while Hugh Laurie is perfectly cast as the posh, bumbling Leader of the Opposition, whose shrill fondness for political correctness provides many of the belly laughs.

Curtis refused to confirm or deny that series favourite Baldrick would also be back, but he did let slip that Tony Robinson has been spending a lot of time shadowing Boris Johnson with a big notebook.

A film buff from Port Talbot was amazed to discover that a hidden track on a DVD of Rowan Atkinson's latest film "Mr Bean At The Treasury" contains the personal records and bank details of 25 million recipients of child tax credits.
