It doesn't matter how many links a site has, It matters who the links are from.

If I look at a site and it has links from the BBC, ac.uk, national news websites + other sites I would recognise as strong in their niche great.

If it all it has is links from sites like freesubmitdirectoryforyou.net & linkresourcehere.com then no thanks.

Also obviously looking into the site itself history is the next thing to do.

Totally agree - I'm not actually worried about numbers but so many people in this game are - particularly toolbar PR. I'd much rather buy a PR1 with a link from a strong .ac.uk or .gov.uk than a PR3 with nothing but directory links and blog comments.

The problem is, if I come to sell my domains, it is often PR and DA that get looked at first.

Talking of which, where are you guys finding it best to sell high PR / DA / PA .uk domains? Everywhere seems hit and miss to me, I guess most people out there want .com, .net or .org.

I'd like to know this too - I've been sitting on a number of domains for years that I might be willing to offload but this forum doesn't seem like the right place - it's mostly keyword and brand based domains people are after.

No, you can't, not unless you're a snake oil salesmen selling to people who don't know any better.

I don't sell, I buy. That makes a lot of difference for a start.

Yes, and that's what OSE and PR prioritise. PR in particular focuses on quality, you can see that in a lot of cases when you compare it to OSE scores.

And in the interests of not getting involved in a discussion about PR again, since I've made my views on that very clear elsewhere, that's all I'm going to say on that particular note.

Good luck finding a site with good PR/OSE scores that is built solely on directory links. That very rarely happens anymore.

As I said in my original post, my rough valuation was based on the figures alone. Obviously you can't get a completely accurate valuation without knowing more about the links, what the name is, the extension, the niche etc. etc. But it is possible to have a rough idea of market value purely based on the numbers.

Not bad.. maybe soon when google sinks them they will be able to sell the site to someone

It's possible to sell anything to anyone if they don't understand what they're buying.

I wasn't calling you a snake oil salesman btw, I was talking in general, sorry if there was a misunderstanding there.

Quite often it sounds like you try to place yourself as an authority of SEO on this forum, but you haven't actually shared anything of substance publicly?

What is there to know? google has made SEO easy in the fact that it's become harder and harder to game it, so it's not even worth bothering.

Optimize your site, but don't bother trying to build links & definitely don't pay someone else to build links for you.

You can still rank quickly with spam, but don't expect to stay there very long.

All you can do is try and make a best on the web site that people like with content they want to share, promote it in various ways and hopefully legitimate links and rankings will follow..

Or you can just pick up an expired domain & use someone else's hard work, stick a site on it and coast.. that is by far the easier option.

Alternatively, if that's all the knowledge and experience you have to offer other members of this forum, please don't attempt to jump in two-footed and suggest others are doing it wrong and that they are snake-oil salesman if they do do it this way.

You have no idea what I have or haven't done to help anyone on here.

SEO myths and mistruths are far too common & you have to nip them in the bud.

What I've perceived to be said is "a tool can tell you a domains general worth"

No it can't, not even close, you can't rely on a tool.

I'm not saying they aren't useful metrics, but only as an initial indication of quality, lift the lid and you often find a lump of crap.

It's not achieved that with directory links though. It's not got BBC level links either, but it has links from a fairly wide number of sources.
