I've just bought a .com and received an message from SEDO saying that the seller needs my passport number to issue a 'legal invoice' (PS - I'm a UK individual not a company).

Surely this cannot be correct due to:
(a) the security risk of handing out passport numbers to strangers, and
(b) only 20% of the US population actually owns a passport (not sure what this % is for the UK population).

Has anyone else seen this before?

Thanks
Glenn

I think it is so you don't have to pay US Sales tax (it's like their VAT).

Although could be completely wrong on it.

I'd just reply and say that you're happy with an "illegal invoice" with just name, address etc as you'd prefer to keep these other details to yourself.

I generally ignore / refuse any requests from Sedo that I think are unreasonable, and to be honest, printing out the transaction details from the Sedo site, including the seller details (name, address etc) on the Sedo contract that is issued online is more than enough for tax purposes.

Regards

You don’t need a passport or number to purchase/sell goods or service’s(with a few exceptions) Sounds as if the seller want’s the details? could be local taxes, duties etc or anything…? Was it stipulated in terms of sale..? Any company/individual ever requires anything other than payment and have not explained why... I’d simply tell them to either sell it without or find another buyer

I have come across this when the seller is trying to distance themselves from the name and proof of transfer to a real owner rather than sold to joe bloggs (but normally only when trademark or other legal disputes are about to come a knocking)

Thanks for the responses.

I expressed my concerns to SEDO...and they haven't pursued the request.
