Bailey - do you not see this as a lucky dip though?

I get what your saying, but the number of potential brands are so numerous that it seems to be too much by chance to sell one - without trying to give someone the idea (particularly if you're buying a FTR)

Are you really saying you thought of a name in a brainstorm, bought FTR, and 6-12 months later someone had the same brainstorm, thought of the exact same domain and willing to pay a premium.

Hope this doesn't sound patronising, I am genuinely interested!

For a while I've seen GTlds selling for large figures whilst people on here would value the .co.uk as FTR (even though it may mean no more Internationally as it would within the UK) - considered 'jumping ship' for a while......

No quite often your waiting 3 years or more - but that said there is an Art to identifying GOOD probable domains. I had promised once before to try and break the constituent parts of good brandables down - I don't think i ever got round to it. If I'd only ever sold a few domains i would put it down to lucky guesses but, that's not the case.

It is going to take a bit of work to put it all down in writing and i do have a very busy week ahead with family - so I will start to put some notes together and providing you can keep all the Values (call it a tool-box) accessible in your head/thinking it does becomes quite intuative. It's not dissimilar to slogan writing - you quite often rework your own initial thoughts until you get the wording as perfect as possible - the pain3 domain in .com for me was/is an obvious given. But, obviously not to others

It's interesting... if you look at the current list of top year-to-date sales on DNJournal.com ( http://www.dnjournal.com/ytd-sales-charts.htm ) and consider just the .com, the breakdown is as follows:

However, I would make an "educated guess" that the vast majority of the 104,292,391 registered .com domains ( http://www.whois.sc/internet-statistics/ ) are "brandable" - they're certainly not "short" since there are only a few tens of thousands of 2, 3 and 4 character .com names available. And they're unlikely to be "generic" when you consider how few commercially relevant words there are in the dictionary and how many keyphrases those will make.

(note: if some of the generics don't look "generic" to you, they are... just not in English!)

Bailey

Be very interested in that when you get round to it. Area of serious interest to me. Think I need to get it down to a bit more than hunches.

Thanks walkinDude and cc976a. I am actually quite looking forward to getting round to doing it - even the last few minutes have caused me some amazment in thinking what I was going to try and put down as a short answer to cc976a. But there is far more to it then some on here seem to appreciate.

Edwin as always your very selective in your representations (I'm not saying unfairly) - i don't recall more than one or two of my sales ever being listed at Dnjournal - by their nature they are direct enquiries. And anybody with common-sense would realise they are going to be predominately mid-table sales.

That's a ludicrous thing to say! I took 100% of the top .com sales and didn't skip any. There's absolutely no reason to expect that any particular "type" of sale will be under-reported compared to other types of sale.

If you're going to use your own case to dispute my list, then by the same token, none of our many hundreds of sales have been listed at Dnjournal and they're all generics :)

But both your case and mine are irrelevant - I picked the fairest public sample I could get my hands on.

The summary: short domains sell. Generics sell. Brandables sell. Of course they do! But you have a higher probability of making a sale with short domains, and with generics (and that probability rises exponentially compared to brandables unless you're VERY savvy about how you "pick" your brandables)

Edwin we are talking here about "BRANDABLES" - Clearly VERY NOT your area - why don't you go get on with your generics. and let a "Fruitful" discussion take place

Would like to take back my comment about learning this game, just had a sales thread taken down, not been given a reason, bit worried now, triple checked all my exacts, checked others exact figures, can't see what i've done wrong. Think I'm calling it a day and finding out my fate tomorrow. Evening gents.

yep its Saturday night - Time to hit the town. i'll start putting some notes down (actually already started) looking forward to analysing my own thoughts - and if it benefits others, thats great

Look forward to reading.....thanks Bailey, think it will be useful for many on here

Pred posted in that the topic saying the title was misleading, I also reported the post for the same reason, so a mod edited the title and then the post was removed, possibly by a different mod to the one who did the edit?

That will be because from the drop down list you chose the _co_uk prefix for the topic title, there were 26 domains in the list you posted, 22 were .org.uk, 3 were .com and only 1 .co.uk. that in itself was misleading and wastes people time viewing the topic.

The full topic title was _co_uk Betting, Singleword orgs, Cruise, More, priced with Local Monthly Exacts

When I saw "Betting" and with _co_uk listed, I was expecting, as would anyone else, that there might be some .co.uk betting names there, there wasn't, the only betting names were .org.uk names like oddsbettingcalculator etc.

The same could be said where you said "Cruise", but it was a .com something along the lines of cheapcruisesfromsouthampton.com, it's also a section for .UK domains only, so no .com's should have been listed

Someone then changed the topic title to Singleword orgs, Cruise, More, priced with Local Monthly Exacts and shortly after it was deleted, presumably for some of the reasons listed above, nothing to do with exacts.

I suppose within the .com space, the opportunity for brandables to sell will benefit from a larger target base, i.e the world. Having been so focused on .co.uk space for so long, a brandable domain that i would automatically pass on in this space would perhaps merit a second thought for the .com space it might seem. Therefore i might have learnt something quite useful from this thread!

Not that i'm going to register a bunch of random made up .com domains just yet though, I have been doing alright with the .co.uk's and end users this year so far but i would be interested to have a read of your thoughts Ray for future possibilites.

Sorry after 12 hours straight on this computer my eyes went a bit blurry. Thought I'd messed up the exacts yet again. Good.

PS and after a pleasant PM exchange with Edwin last night, we are both back on good terms. I now have a better understanding of Edwins perspective on 'Brandables' and the concerns i'm sure he shares with many.

As i said a busy week ahead for me - so to do the piece justice It will have to be in 7 to 10 days time
