Nominet non-exec election 2017

The reason that Nominet is heading in such an overtly commercial direction is because the large registrars dominate voting rights. So Edwin, why shouldn't Nominet be a one-member-one-vote democracy?

Maybe passionate smaller registrars are capable of putting the future of the .uk namespace ahead of pounds and pence?

Of course, looking at the salaries and bonuses thrown around in this year's accounts, Nominet staff are pretty happy with the current model.

So as much as voting for David was a disaster last time, I've backed the protest candidates again this year.

Doomed to failure, maybe. But we still have to try.

Kudos for being here Jacob, but it's too little, too late. You need to make noise further in advance rather than just come around kissing babies at election time. For what it's worth, despite watching your video, I deemed you too corporate, sorry.

Out of interest, how are the voting rights calculated? Have they included un-exercised .uk rights in the DuM count?

Deploring their commercial expansion away from domains is entirely justified. Complaining because the huge players have somewhat more say is not.

Yes my bad. I know my place and I'll be quiet. Not quite sure how you decided it was a company considering it was given to them, has no shareholders, and doesn't share profits out but I bow to your superior knowledge on the matter. I'll go back to my real 'companies' that actually make *me* and *investors* money.

I voted solely for Phil Buckingham. Proposed by Angie Barrow and seconded by Reza Sobati - two people I have known in the business for a long time and respect. If you are a member, I suggest you vote however you see fit, and however small your holdings.[/QUOTE

Thanks for voting for me . As my election statement said I actively encourage you ALL to vote , however small your votes are. They are NOT wasted .. They ALL count , especially with the consolidation in the top 7 ( from last time ) . Well today , Go Daddy's acquisition of HEG ( incl 123Reg) was confirmed by Nominet SO 123Reg 's 2.8M regs/ vote just dropped !! :D:D:D:D It has huge implications.in the calcs and voting cap level . So please vote - tell another tag holder - This is winnable now. The best strategy is put down your I st preference ( me) , maybe your second and third , but TOTALLY LEAVE BLANK ( so cant / wont transfer ) the one female candidate , with huge conflicts of interest , with already 300000 votes from her OWN REGISTRAR. How is this fair and equitable ? Then email me [email protected] and arrange a call on anything you want to discuss and what you'd like me to do for you - before voting . Please then register and join all the candidates on the webinar this Friday 7th @ 11.00 and ask a question. Good luck with your voting. Thanks Phil .

I won't be voting. Pointless position that is unable to stop any changes nominet make to benefit themselves and top registrars (with which they may have ties) at the expense of the consumer and smaller registrars.
RobM it isn't a pointless position.

Yes I see that Phil - I will be voting when I read through. Hope it doesn't change the winner though like it changed David.

Phil

I "love" how you cast wild aspersions around about Kelly Salter without even having the balls to call her by name.
If you feel there are issues with her candidature then why not spell them out clearly?
If your accusations are baseless or simply a figment of your overactive imagination then your assertions above are bordering on defamation.

Michele, who for the record nominated Kelly and had zero qualms in doing so

It's not really a wild aspersion. Kelly is an employee of Namesco and the Dada group - and is therefore almost certain to get the backing of that vote and possibly other large registrars as a result.

For what it's worth, I agree that Phil might have worded his post more appropriately.

Sorry, but there's a massive difference between getting backing of several companies you have links with and Phil's comments about Kelly. Go back and read what he wrote.

  • Being part of a large registrar does bring conflicts of interest, of course. Kelly will have to declare these and avoid votes as a result. Likewise it can bring a better understanding of the domain name industry, but then Phil isn't exactly short of that himself.
  • Using the wording "only female candidate" wasn't very sensitive. And targeting her so deliberately vs the other three likewise. It would have been enough to say "Kelly Salter works at Namesco and, as a big registrar candidate, is the one to beat"
  • Already 300,000 votes for Kelly? Not much argument there is there.
What have I missed?

No you've got most of it.

However I'd disagree that referring to Kelly as "only female candidate" wasn't sensitive. I'd view that as downright offensive and quite sexist

If Mr Buckingham was really a strong candidate he should be focussing on his strengths instead of making ridiculous attacks on other members.

It's indicative of how close the election may be that we have multiple candidates participating on this thread - all the more reason for those with the right to vote to do so.

Only for them to disappear immediately after the voting closes? Probably! Nice little earner for the successful candidate!

All candidate videos are now available here for people who are interested, but didn't see the voting pack.

So true :)
It's unfortunate, but unless the candidate(s) are domain investors most of them won't have active accounts on this site ..
But what's more concerning is that a lot of them don't even bother with Nominet's own forum ..
