Nominet chief tells domainers to grow up - Register

What I don't understand is why Kevin Murphy (the reporter who attended the conference itself) would write an anti-domainer article for El Reg when he is actually from: http://domainincite.com/about/

I wouldn't say it's anti-domainer. Lesley had some strong words, I just reported them and added a bit of context.

If you ignore the jokey tabloid headline, I thought it was quite positive. You'd be hard pressed to find an article about domaining in the mainstream press that actually acknowledges that not all domainers are evil.

If I'd wanted to pander to domainer-hating Reg readers (read the comments, they're telling) I could have easily have done so.

However why didn't he write a positive article like this he did a week earlier:
http://domainincite.com/cctlds-under-the-hammer-at-uk-domainer-conference/

To be honest, outside of the domainer community, there's not a lot of appetite for long lists of domains ;)

Did you enjoy the free bar by any chance? A bit too much me thinks.

Where do you think the mainstream press get these articles. They can't be bothered to do their own research, so they read people like you who write these jokey headlines.

Luckily people in domaining know "The Register" is a joke and don't take it too serious. If you read my first post on the subject, and one that has had problems with Lesley and Nominet in the past, even I didn't believe Lesley's speech was given in the context you described.

I'm sorry you feel that way. The Reg is often tongue in cheek, yes. But the current editor's a bloody good bloke who's very keen indeed on accuracy.

I actually had a decent chat with Lesley after the panel to make sure I understood where she was coming from.

It seems to me that the UK domainer community has the same perception problem as the ICANN registrar community in the US.

You may have read last week about eNom et al getting hauled before Obama to explain themselves with regards fake pharmaceuticals.

That's the kind of thing Lesley was talking about. A few bad apples -- or just slack practices in general -- create the impression of a lawless industry. Then governments step in to regulate, adding friction to business.

Spot on Greywing as always although the article was published before the bar opened....

In my opinion instead of creating a "code of conduct" for domaining which would be like trying to heard cats - we need to get companies like Namedrive, Sedo, and any large (domainer friendly) registrar with a marketing budget to churn out positive PR about the UK secondary market. In return we should use and support their services and attend events like the one this week.

No need to create a new one:

You're right about herding cats, mind.

Maybe you should have a look at a code of conduct for journalists, sure they seem to do more damage to this world than domainers.

Is the Register a member of any of these groups? pot kettle kettle black in any order you wish to arrange it on your garbage site is fine bud...

At the end of the day you have been caught making nonsense headlines up, and time to man up and take it on the chin Kev.

Nonsense headlines? Drinking on the job? The publication I write for is a joke?

I can see I'm not welcome here, so I shall take my leave.

Well if you do a bit more digging/research you will find out I tried to setup a Domain Name Association in the UK a few years ago and it failed.

Even the ICA itself has had its own problems:
http://www.domainnamenews.com/people/internet-commerce-association-executive-director-resigns/3776

However the CEO of Domain Monster is interested in setting something up (he said at the show) and if you get people like this on board then Nominet will have to take notice.

We also need the El Reg freelancers like yourself, Kieren McCarthy, Chris Williams to help the industry instead of making the situation worse.

Just for the record: the headline is of course link bait, the bar didn't open until well after the article had been published and I like finding mistakes in El Reg articles e.g. OFT should be BIS

Welcome or not you are free to counter any criticism you may feel is written towards you rather than put your tail between your legs and saunter off with a lame limp for a parting piece

Fair point, but there's not a great deal that needs responding to.

GreyWing clearly dislikes The Register's headline style and/or journalists in general and is having a few cheap shots at me to blow off steam or something. Good luck to him. There's nothing I can say to change that.

Andrew says that The Register should carry positive pieces on the domain name industry. They do. I've written several myself. Negative stories about domainers will appear when high-profile people say negative things about them. If somebody could figure out how to stop people saying negative things about domainers, problem solved. The solution isn't spin.

I should note, by the way, that I'm a freelancer. I'm not employed full-time by the Reg, and I don't speak on its behalf.

Play them down as cheap shots bud if you want. As for my problem with people like you, it's that you don't have a clue about what you are talking about so you just make it up, OFT or BIS? who cares lets just pick one for the article.

Now if there was nobody in that room who actually heard the speech from Lesley and put it in the right context, there would be a thread here dedicated to condemning Nominet and her being in charge of it. More confrontation that we just don't need.

But like I said, nobody takes you seriously round here, so as you can see there isn't one.

Kevin, I hope a few people giving you a rough ride won't deter you from continuing to participate on here. The positive "good news" stories in the .co.uk namespace are as likely as not to come from those who are inside the Acorn community, so your contributions to shaping the dialogue would be very welcome as far as I'm concerned.

Cheers Edwin.

Water off a duck's back, really. I've had all the arguments with armchair reporters far too many times to let it bother me any more. Nowadays it just bores me, to be honest.

I'll stick around, if only to provoke GreyWing into continuing to prove Lesley's point. ;)

I doubt you can do that fella.. If I can put up with what I did from Nominet in public and smile, then a little freelancer ain't going to be an issue.

Stay around, we can all have a laugh at you not knowing the difference between the OFT and BIS. :D

I'll make a deal with you GW -- if I ever write about the OFT or BIS I'll make sure I get it right. To date, I've never reported on either.

You may be confusing me with somebody else.
