I used to dream of buying a really good, top-of-the-line Tag Heuer when I'd "made it". The interesting thing is that now that I could if I wanted to, I don't feel any particular need to any more!

Yep, same with me and cars. I used to have 4 at one time. Now I'm happy without the paperwork and to be honest, time is "everything" and that is one thing we are not getting more of.

If it was me I'd feel pretty stupid next month when I wanted to buy links for the new site I'd built and couldn't afford them, while I was wearing 3 x newspapers links, 50 x blogrolls and 100 x permanent blog posts on my wrist :p

Made me lol big time

And that's one reason why my wife and I are choosing more and more to value experiences over physical "stuff". For example, we went on a fabulous trip round the world a couple of years back - for the money we'd spent on it, we could have had all sorts of wrist-bling instead, but then we wouldn't have all the great memories the trip brought with it!

I think the majority of people who say that I should have spent money on a domain rather then my watch have got the wrong end of the stick.

There is money in the bank to invest in domains however what I am saying is I'm not ready to invest £5,000 on something I know very little about. It's because of this I will be learning to walk before I can run.

What happens if things go tits up? I decide not to get into affiliate marketing. I think thats perhaps the risk part in spending £5,000 on a domain.

There is however no risk in buying my watch as A) I love it B) It has sentimental meaning to me. Buying a watch of highish value when you have little money spare is when it becomes a risk.

As I said, I worked hard for something I wanted and I've rewarded myself for it. :)

I think you have made a massive mistake with this line of thought. A good domain built out into a good site would be significantly less risk than that watch.

In the affiliate game it takes money to make money, you're now going to be fighting an uphill battle with no money. At least you'll always know exactly how long it'll be till the postman delivers your giro though :D

If you can buy the watch & invest online like you wanted to, I see absolutely nothing wrong with spending 5k on a watch. If you've used your savings to buy something shiny with no real practical use, it was stupid really (in my opinion of course!).

My first "proper" watch was a TAG 1000. Lovely chunky, solid watch.. You knew you were wearing it. That was 10 years ago. I remember buying it off my best mate, wearing it for a while then selling it to a jeweler. Think that was the start of my likeness for collecting watches. You have started something now I quite fancy something else now.. Time to sell some domains....

Longines is my watch of choice recently.

I believe it's a maturity thing, the older you get the more you realize that there is actually far less value in material things.

Not that i would not mind a spare 5k to buy a watch, i would buy a casio and let the wife decide how to spend the rest.

She is due to give birth this week so 5k would take the hormonal pressure off:)

If it makes you happy and good then its a great buy.
Would agree you should have jumped on plane to HK and bought there same time you would have had nice holiday.

Just back from HK 3 weeks ago and the deals from the 2000 plus rolex shops where supperb. all makes of watches at about 25% less of UK prices.

The IWC is a fantastic watch its class so congrats on the buy and enjoy it.

Provided you didn't buy a total lemon to start with, I would say if you no longer want to be an affiliate then you would sell the domain for more than you paid for it - as the time you put into it (should have) increased the value of it.

I would assume that each day you put that watch on your wrist it loses value. Each day you work on a website it gains in value - which is why I think the "thats too risky" comment was a little misplaced.

It all comes down to what your plans are for affiliate things - if you want to do it as a part time hobby while you work a 9-5 then you don't need a lot of money to spend as profit isn't the end goal. If you want to this to be a job rather than an alternative to playing 5 a side or the xbox then having cash in the bank is vital. If you're sitting on 100k then 5k for a watch is neither here or there...

If you want to be a full time affiliate and you just spent more than 10% of your readily available cash on an item of zero value (which in this sense the watch is, it won't help you make anything) then I don't think it was a great idea.

Away from the affiliate side of things, why didn't you go abroad to buy it?

I have a couple  of Rolex watches now which I travelled to Gibralter to purchase.

Are they an investment? No, of course not, they will never be worth what I paid for them.

Do I enjoy wearing them? Of course :D

Would I have bought a watch if i didn't have a steady income from websites to finance it? No.

I think the OP has dropped a clanger here.

The problem with posting here is it is a domain forum. If you had posted you bought some domains instead of a timepiece on a watch forum you would have received the same answers.

I think you are quite right. If you can afford it then go for it. It is something you will have for the rest of your life and I bet you will still have a little grin when checking the time 5yrs down the road.

Nice watch.

.

IMO things like that are a status symbol, you want people to think you a wealthy.

Make sure you insure it because there is a high chance you will get mugged for it.

This weekend when your out on the town swimming up the highstreet at 2am covered in kebab sauce it will slowly dawn on you that the grinding noise you can hear is not your belt buckle scraping along the concrete.

Wear is on a special occasion, if at all. Certainly not out and about, its asking for trouble, though they are tougher, they will still scrape. Not as cheap fix. Hope it is well insured.

It's been interesting to hear your opinions, some I disagree with, some I agree with. I wasn't necessarily asking for opinions regarding it's price though rather the timepiece itself.

At the end of the day, yes I might have paid a little bit more for it then other places but i'm happy with my purchase.

@mat It's a good job I'm not a drinker nor a raver then. :)

@frog I have no time in my schedule to be jetting off to asia, just for a watch. We would be looking at late 2011 at the earliest and by that time it would not have any sentimental value to me which is one of the main reasons I purchased it.

For £1700 cheaper in USA I'd have went there... just checked Expedia and you could go to NYC next Tuesday and fly back Wednesday for £1000 including hotel :D

I wouldn't have personally spent that much on a watch, but if I was going to then I would have done as others have said and bought it from abroad (and like Frog mentioned, there's no need to go the the far east).

But, if you're happy with the purchase and still have money in the bank then that's all that matters.

Please stop calling it a timepiece

Made me laugh. :D

A watch is a timepiece, no? Anyway onwards and upwards.

'Watch' is probably the better word for non-specialists.

Incidentally, I just noticed the owner of Watches.co.uk domain also owns Timepiece.co.uk.

Guess which domain is used only as a redirect to the other? ;)
