New Google Update 24th April

... also remember it takes several days for the dust to settle.

Some sites spring back up, some disappear to page 10+ where the ghouls and demons live ...

Lol - as you look around the net and at different forums it looks like they've made a complete cock up with this update, there are some very strange results.

The worm has turned for Google imho. I agree with dashu... forums are alight with people totally pissed with big G. Its a bloodbath.

This is pretty much the worst 1 month period in SEO I've ever seen in over 10 years of watching big updates.

Interesting seachange in peoples views on Bing/Yahoo over the pond because of this.

Not going to take much to make people focus away from G and thats it...Google will start its slide.

About time.

I'm guessing you're thinking black hat SEO forums...

If that's the case then google haven't fk'd up this update at all - they've got it right.

Google don't really want you to do any link building at all - they'd prefer it if links were 100% natural and organic and webmasters just concentrated on creating great content instead of spending 10% of their time on content and 90% building links.

Its all well and good all the people who make and own websites not care about Google, and I am one of them as they fucked up on labeling one of my sites a parked for months now 2 days after do this, but its everyone who searches google, how are we going to convince them all to use Bing or yahoo?

Well for me, I have "lost" sites that were unworked on, just natural organic backlinking - just disappeared off the ranking.

While I agree that G needs to weed out nonrelevant sites, many perfectly relevant (and white hat) sites are being affected.

Seems that ive had 1 or 2 sites that have been hit!

Does seem that there is no consistency for why some are hit and to be honest there are a lot of sites hit for no reason all above board!

Google seriously messed up

One or two of mine have taken a bit of a battering too (my http://funnyquotes.org.uk/ site went down a few places) , whereas others haven't been impacted at all. Seems like quite a big update from what people are saying.

It's when you have blank blogs showing up in no.1, universities for viagra, and other weirdness that suggests they've cocked up, not listening to black hatters who've been caught out.

I've had a site live since 2004, pretty okay, has always been in top 2 pages, now nowhere to be found, it's even 5th for a search of the 2 unusual words in the sites domain.

And I haven't done any link building or anything else to it.

I registered seocleanup.co.uk, linkremoval.co.uk and rankingpenalty.co.uk the other day. Starting to think they might be shrewd investments.

It is a mess.
My biggest traffic site:
For some search terms it's disappeared, while for others the relevant page has slipped onto the second page or completely disappeared.
eg keyword1, keyword2 has stayed in the top 3 positions (where it's been for several years
but put an s on the end of the second keyword and it's disappeared completely from the top100.
For the most generic search term where i was position 5, I'm down to 20.
Above me are out of date news articles and one site where the only mention of the keyword is in the title of one blogpost where it is a subsidiary word, not what the post is about at all

Word on the streets is that it's an over optimization penalty...

Keyword stuffing & link spam mainly.

Not only on your sites, but on the pages that link to your sites..

If you are to be penalised for sites linking to you (which of course is out of your control) there should be some tool in the google webmaster tools where you can basically tick to disregard links you dont wish to be counted towards your seo, otherwise you can easly pay someone to do a mass link campaign on your competitors?? Or am i just missing the point.

I must say though, my sites that have got little or no backlinks to them, have not moved with regards to positioning but the one i mentioned earlier had blog links to it!

You don't get penalised - they just get discounted..

If those links were the reasons you were ranking and they don't count any more, then you drop.

Certainly it seems linked to Google's pre-announced anti-overoptimisation measures.
Trouble is they seem to have messed it up good and proper(as usual)

So a post say sites like digg and hotels combined up dropped visibility by up 40%

From around 20 sites I've checked, all have dropped except 1. The 1 which didnt drop has had a big jump for its 4 main terms. All 4 terms were bottom of page 1 for last year or so, they then dropped to pages 2-3 just before Christmas. All 4 are now 2nd-5th on the first page.

Its a site I bought and havent done any work to for the last 6 months or so, looking at the backlink profile, they are mainly comments from related pages, using a variety of anchor texts.

so far:

4 up
6 non movers
7 down
1 off radar (page 17, was page 1)
