With 6 months to go until Mothers Day I'm looking at putting MothersDayCards.co.uk up for sale

Suggestions for a reasonable starting price?

Thanks

I'd go lower, just as if you make any site on it it's only going to see real business a week before and then it'll end.

I'd go low £xxx

Technically if you got it ranking in Google.com and Google UK you could take advantage of the UK mothers day in March and the international mothers day (U.S etc.) in May. A double whammy

Plus its a seasonal event that isn't going to change, so for someone already knowledgeable in the ecards or gifts markets then could be a nice little earner each year

Any one else concur with this assumption?

No, because you're not going to be able to rank the .co.uk in USA, and even if you did every American visitor is immediately not going to click it because its a foreign site and useless to them - they'll assume its selling UK products from the UK.

I will have to defend myself on that and disagree with you

You can get a .co.uk to rank internationally. I was in South Africa only last week and was researching this very thing using Google.co.za (South Africa have their mothers day in May) and in the first page results there was a .co.uk and a .com.au domain for the term "mothers day cards" so technically speaking you can

The assumption that people will just not visit the site because of the extension would depend on how good your Title and Meta Description as a call to action at overcoming this and also the fact that the product is not exactly a 3 piece suite means it can be shipped anywhere in the world with relative ease...so it's not like its a logistical issue

Let me demonstrate with a very basic example:

Mothers Day Cards | Great selection, worldwide shipping
At mothersdaycards.co.uk we have a great selection of mothers day cards and
ship to worldwide locations including US, Australia, South Africa and more!
http://www.mothersdaycards.co.uk

Anyway, its irrelevant, as who ever makes an offer on it will make it for their own reasons

All the best

Yeah I'm aware

My friend Russ actually ended up buying it and then sold it again to Meridian Press after getting it to No.1 on Google UK for "Christmas Cards"

Definitely a better domain, I agree but the potential is still there none the less for MDC

Thanks for the estimate, quite a good selection to go from now

I'm thinking I'd be prepared to let it go for £500, if I don't get that then I'll develop it for 2012 instead

Best

One ranking you happened to see, one time, in google.co.za proves almost nothing. Technically a .co.uk can rank in a foreign search engine, statistically its simply not likely.

Its absolutely a logistical issue. If you go online tonight to buy a birthday card for your girlfriend and her birthday is in a week, are you going to risk ordering from abroad? Or are you going to go to a cheaper store that can do next day delivery for free? People are always far more confident when dealing with local businesses, for a variety of reasons. Like risk of fraud, too long in delivery, hassle if the goods need returned, customs, currency transaction fees, etc etc etc. It really is a horrendous idea to try and market a physical product to the American market from a .co.uk domain.

Let me demonstrate with a very basic example:

You are going to absolutely wreck your own clickthroughs from the search results by doing it on a .co.uk and then telling them in the description you ship from abroad. I'd rather do it on a .org, don't mention the location and hope they don't even realise where they are buying from till they have items in the shopping cart.

Anyway, its irrelevant, as who ever makes an offer on it will make it for their own reasons

I think its quite relevant - its a valuation thread after all, and being able to rank the site in the first place, get them to click on your listing and then actually convert them would certainly be 3 of the biggest issues when deciding whether to buy a domain, or how much for.
