Right nightmare trying to restart it just now, got to desktop and it was fine for about 10 seconds and I thought it was fixed, then went multi coloured and twitched a bit, then went black screen, so had to hold start button down to switch it off again.

Just restarted it again and all seems fine for the moment, will see how long this lasts for before screen flashes funny colours again.

Well that lasted all of 10 seconds, went to home page after my last post and screen went weird and froze again :( Rebooted and desktop came straight up, no problem, launched Opera browsers, logged in to Acorn and boom, screen freezes and goes black.

Now back on HP quick view to post, just thinking, if I can get desktop up again, then go to do a factory reset, what happens if it freezes again after I click to rest the laptop, that will probably screw it up completely?

Well I could help you if you can get teamviewer going

Just Googled that, hell no, no offence Ashton, but I wouldn't let someone remotely view my computer. I don't trust programs like that, you would never know who you were letting on your computer without your knowledge.

Try F11 when you first boot should get you to recovery manager for factory reset

If the HP quick view function works fine before windows loads then there's definitely a windows graphics driver conflict somewhere, I'm pretty sure there is no problem with the hardware.

I believe HP quick view is a Linux based utility, therefore it loads it's own driver when starting which is why your graphics are ok at that point. If it was my laptop, I would do a factory reset, failing that I would then format the hard drive and install a full version of Linux.

Tapped F11 at startup to get the factory settings page, installed that and it went fine, then, there was a balls up

After clicking finish to restart the computer after the factory reset, up came the screen to set my details on the fresh install, then the screen went mental colours again, and during the set up, I could barely make out anything that was written, as the normal size 10px font was now all different colours and covered with different screen colours, a bit like a captcha but 100 times harder to read, then the bastard screen turned black again and froze, so I had to hit the off button to shut the computer down during set up, think I was near or at the end of it, though.

After many more reboots to try my old Linux CD, that wouldn't work, then I thought, that might be because this Linux CD is one I got in 2005, so might not be Windows 7 compatible?

Anyway, many more reboots later, finally got back to desktop via safe mode again, the desktop is a clean install and all my old documents have been removed, so the factory reset worked at least, but I cannot get to login or to my desktop in a normal boot as it's just a continuous loop of blue screen with lots of white writing about some driver error, that lasts about 5 seconds then goes back to "starting windows", then screen goes black and nothing happens, or, it just goes back to the improper shutdown page and choose safe mode or load windows normally, which just takes me back to the blue screen each time:mad:

I've downloaded Opera browser and going to set that up for now so that I can at least use safe mode, but will have to buy a new computer sometime in the next week now, and it wont be a f*%@#ng HP this time, assholes:mad:

HP quick view doesn't even come up now either.

Linux is nothing to do with windows. No compatibility to worry about at all.
Though I would question if there would be any viable drivers available in 2005 for hardware which is 3 months old.
Rather than buy a new one just give them a call. Their warranty support is excellent. Its the reason im happy to spend the extra on them. To be able to get hardware sorted quick is worth a couple of extra quid to me.

If the screen went mental after a factory reset then its the hardware, return it as its faulty under warranty.

The only other thing - if it is the software and it wont let you factory reset it. Would be to clean the drive (I recommend DBAN) and start again. However taking it back is probably your best option.

I made some progress last night, I constantly restarted and clicked to load windows normally when offered that option, after countless restarts it eventually recognised that it had been reset to factory conditions.

It gave me the fingerprint login set up, after doing that it crashed again, but with each restart it would go longer before crashing and enabling me to get through the HP register your new computer section etc, each section continually crashed, but upon restart would let me get to the end of each registration section until finally I got to desktop and it loaded :)

But then it soon crashed again with all the weird colours and freezing, anyway, I called it a night at that point.

This morning I turned the laptop on, desktop loaded straight away, but crashed within a minute, so I turned the power cable off at the wall and forgot to turn it back on when I rebooted, then I noticed something, after desktop loaded, I then switched the power back on at the wall, and a white box appeared on the desktop asking if I wanted to change the ATI graphic stuff, options were change or cancel, I clicked change, and then it crashed again.

So, I went through the same startup again using only the laptop battery for the power, got back to desktop, switched the mains cable on, this time chose cancel when the white box appeared, the computer then performed normally from 8:00am until I just rebooted it a short while ago in order to restart my AVG anti virus.

I did the same as earlier, but clicked change when the white box appeared just as a test, upon which the computer crashed as I thought it would, restarted and clicked cancel and now working fine again, so at least I now know how to at least get the bugger to not crash, for now anyway :)
