Wanted: Domain Appraisal model domain names - value/dev opinion/advice

Have the following names (all .org.uk)

model airplanes
model airships
model bikes
model boats
model cars
model helicopters
model motorbikes
model planes
model rockets
model ships
model submarines
model tanks
model trains
model trucks

and model kits dot co dot uk

anyone care to offer their opinion on the set and if developed what route to take (i.e. seperate sites for each etc etc).

I think that you have posed a great question.

Individually they vary dramatically from, say, trains and boats to airships and submarines. Collectively, though, they are a decent bundle with a wide range of highs and lows.

So, what is your timeline to exploit them individually ? I am sure you could build them up individually over time, recognising there is a fundamental maximum market size difference between those I mentioned earlier. But what does that mean ? x% commission on a fraction of online sales to a minute community of UK builders of airship models may well not satisfy your needs for food, clothing and shelter, let alone any greater aspirations. y% of model train sales may do with bells on.

How much of it is down to you ? If you can ignite communities, they will do the hard work for you. But, taking tanks as an example, why would someone choose to come to you in preference to, say, (reverse the letters and Google) AVFAM ?

OK then, what about collectively ? What about a small, interconnected network of the individual sites ? Could that flog generics such as paint and glue alongside the local discrete train and airship products ? Do Beaxxies and Modexxone have affiliate schemes (if indeed they still exist) ? The idea of running a small interconnected network feels attractive.

I really like the concept of a small interconnected network of discrete but related sites, either for this or, say, geodomains. However I struggle with how to translate that into making serious money out of it.

I think they're worth nothing..

Personally I wouldn't register any keyword EMDs unless they were also brandable/ or extremely highly searched.

I don't understand why anyone would box themselves in.

Just use

models.co.uk/planes
models.co.uk/cars

etc

Then you only need to build links to one site and all the pages get benefit.

Trying to do anything with the org.uk's is a waste of time.

Unless you sourcing and selling yourself can’t see there is enough £ in any of them if you just use the fact you have a name as basis for a business most of the time they’ll fail...The time cost return on sites has to be in the thinking and most often its not ?

I'd put a simple site on each of them, with directly related content and no monetisation. Have an easy goal of 500 UV's per month per site. If you can achieve that you suddenly have a bit more porridge in your bowl.

Thanks for all your replies, much appreciated. I respect people's opinion but .org.uk names are still favoured by the search engines. I'm still not 100% sure what I will do with them yet, but I am going to pick 1 to develop and then blog about it's progress, just to see if my way of doing things is right (and to prove you all wrong hahaha!)

Thanks for taking the time to post. I think modelkits.co.uk is the best of the bunch and certainly could build that into something nice, so will have to ponder this.

have regged modeltoys org uk as advised, will add to the pile.

I think Google treats .co.uk the same as .org.uk, however the big recent change is that Google has removed most (if not all) of the SEO bonus it gave to EMDs. Whereas before .org.uk were useful for SEO purposes / affiliate sites they have fairly limited value now imho.

I think it will be fairly difficult to rank for any of those model type keywords unless you do a fair bit of work and have some pretty good and unique content.

I would recommend building a hub site where you list all the model products and keep this upto date, and then have sub sites which import the data from the main hub site.

For example I've got a magazine business.

My main hub is www.magazinesubscription.co.uk

some of my hub sites (which import the data from the above)

http://www.fitnessmagazines.co.uk/all-fitness-magazines
http://www.pregnancymagazines.co.uk/pregnancy-and-baby-magazines

and so on.

Might make it easier to keep ontop of the "products"

If your able to add content to each sub site then even better!

I have a few .org.uk all ranking top of google they are still ranking well

They rank just the same as any .co.uk
