Maximise your Voting Rights

Although Nominet have not announced when they will close the register for the purposes of determining the voting rights, this weekend might be the last opportunity to maximise your voting rights.

The voting rights are based upon the number of paid-for domains on your account, domains that have not been paid for do not count, which means that those that need renewing and are passed their expiry date, do not count.

So if you would like to maximise the paid-for DUM on your account:
  1. Renew any domains that have expired, or are due to expire up to and including 22nd March (the date of the EGM) before 23:59 on 28th February.
  2. Pay all outstanding invoices, and promptly pay the invoices that will be issued on the 8th March (don’t wait for any Direct Debit)

Of course, this does mess up the practice of renewing on the last opportunity that some members do with their portfolio, but one should balance this against a chance to oust the current leadership. This happens to also be the last chance to increasing your expenditure and therefore reduce your profits for those using a cash basis with the standard tax year, and the bills for March activity falls in the next tax year.

On the other hand, maybe they don't want to tell us when the register will be closed for calculating the voting rights.

Of course, it could be that they've already closed the register, but are refusing to tell us. If this is the case, there is always the option to 'unrenew' up until the end of the 7th March in order to renew and be billed at a later point.

The fact that they are able to close the register without proper notification to members is absurd. What we’re seeing right now is the realisation of “governments should be afraid of their citizens, not vice versa” in action, but the government in this case is still not quite grasping exactly who is working for who here.

Clearly, yes, there should be notification of closing date - and frankly, given the time scales, that notification should happen immediately.

Thanks Andrew, good tip - I've renewed a few more names. I note that the EGM has made it to their website menu, I hadn't noticed that before.
