Welcome to Acorn Ling, you did well to stand your ground against the dragon's, made for entertaining TV that night :)

Conspiracy Theory Mind, me? These days you have to take most things with a pinch of salt,

Firstly if you are Ling then welcome. :-D

Secondly, A decent percentage of offers the dragons turned down have gone on to be very successful, so there is no shame in coming off there without an investment.

Your website goes against everything I have ever seen work, but if it works for you then keep it as it is.

Tax scam comments, your business would stand out as a red flag to the HMRC, as it has high turnover and low taxable profits.

That's about it,

All th best

That's what you are missunderstanding, the turnover is £283k (not £2.3 mill a month). It's like affiliate sales/commission, if I get affiliate sales of £100k at a commission rate of 5%, the money going through my business is £5k.

I'm not misunderstanding it mate, I'm fully aware of what people are saying.

However Lings site says "This site may be fun, but I am really quite professional and I sell over £1,000,000 of new cars and vans
every month. My customers are happy! Read LETTERS! Click with confidence! Please to browse! - Ling"

I refer you to the point which says "I sell over £1,000,000 of new cars and vans every month"

I can be an affiliate for PC World, but I don't sell computers. I'm merely an affiliate, I am not involved in any payment. That's what I was referring to when I said Tax Scam. Lings website statement above which led me to the Tax Scam remark, is wrong, unless she buys the car from one source and sells it to another.

I imagine if someone brings the car back to Miss Ling with a head gasket gone, the first thing she is going to say is "I didn't sell you it, take it to the sellers".

Like I said earlier in this thread, I understand why she says it and not having a go at her for saying it, it sounds better and when you are selling your business idea for an investment or getting customers to trade through your site, you need credibility and that statement, at least on the surface gives her it.

All the best

Greywing, basically - Yes.

Currently, my average is £2.3m of cars "moved" a month (or £28m+ last year) at retail prices. I use that figure so that people can compare my volume to a trad motor dealer. I do have a full sales stat pop-up page on my website, where the full monthly breakdown of 2007 is listed and Jan 2008. You can find it without the pop-up bit at /feature/stats.php - So I am not hiding or misleading with these figures, just giving an accurate view of volume. My sales commission is roughly 1%, paid by various sources (dealers, finance companies/wholesale brokers, etc, depending on how the deal is arranged).

This is similar to a traditional dealer saying "I sell £Xm", and giving you the whole turnover. Well, to be level with my figures, they should just give you the margin they make.

If a head gasket goes on a new car, no one has to take it back to the seller. I certainly help customers in any way I can by arranging courtesy cars, talking to dealers etc. Of course I do not carry the warranty responsibility for £28m of new cars, that would be absurd. I think you are unfair, here. In every case you can take the broken-down car (or the AA etc will uplift it) to any franchised dealer in the whole of Europe for full warranty repairs for free (for 3-years). The dealer doesn't pay for these, the manufacturer does. Dealers queue up to do this work, it is profitable for them. So no one in the whole industry says "take it to the sellers". This would be impractical as I sell all across the UK, plus, I am not a garage workshop company.

Imagine you bought a Ford fiesta new from a Ford dealer in say, Edinburgh. It blows the head gasket in Cornwall. You are not going to take it back to Edinburgh for repair, they do it locally and give you a courtesy car, so the same applies to any method of new car purchase.

Hope this makes it clear. No one is trying to mislead anyone here.

Amazing, huh? Like seeing one eating with a knife and fork, or selling cars instead of serving in a takeaway.

Wonders never cease :)

Now, where did I put that coolie hat? Ah, it's next to my Blitish passport! hehehe.

Yes, well, it was for the publicity. Not sure if anyone goes on that show for the investments (least of all the Dragons). I made them laugh, that is my greatest achievement on the show. It was fun, but hard work. They filmed for 3 1/2 hours, for 9 minutes. On the Dragons’ Den night - 14th Feb 2006, after the first minute of the programme, my website activity went mental. Live visitors went up to over 550 concurrent. The “clicks” of arriving visitors sounded like a machine-gun! My server was disk-swapping like hell. On that first night, I had over 5000 unique visitors (between 8pm and midnight). The next day, I had over 10,000 visitors. This volume settled to a doubling of pre-DD levels and has stayed pretty constant since then. All the Google links and stories posted on the web about me helped enormously, of course. I’m always surprised that many other businesses on Dragons’ Den don’t have a website to promote to give instant gratification to the 2m TV viewers.

They have asked me for ANOTHER follow up filming, of course I say yes, that's great for business. They also gave me a full chapter in the DD book, I scanned it, here: http://www.lingscars.com/ling-dragons-den.php

Certainly not criticising you Ling,

You have done well and nobody can argue with that. You have said nothing on that website that I wouldn't have said myself.

The head gasket comment was just regarding that I wouldn't expect you to have a set of socket spanners in your office. :-D and would instead direct them to the relevant warranty providers.

Anyway, keep it up and the fact that people remember you without looking your name up on the internet, is a powerful sales tool.

Welcome to the forum, Ling! :)

I say good for you and here's to your future success!
