"Your thoughts please"

Dear all,

I do keep harping on about this but many people before me have said it in many ways, nom-steer may have fallen into a den of iniquity akin to that of a lynch mob, from both sides of the ludicrous and sometimes insurmountable fence, that we stand on. And some may groan when a nom-steer email drops into their inbox and delete it.

People are all too ready to quickly jump in and pull to pieces anything that is said that contradicts their own point of view. I am not saying that this is wrong but IMHO one of the things that the "nom-steer spirit" was originally meant to stand for, was discussing new ideas, politeness and innovation. This rarely happens and I for one am sick of it.

No wonder there is only a core few, who in my opinion must have skin as thick as a rhino.

I am not saying we must stop any of these discussions (some are very
relevant) but may I suggest that we have some new NOM-. May I suggest "nom-politics" for argumentative debate or "nom-ideas" for new ideas to pass to Nominet (and the greater community for that matter) that the PAB or others could then discuss. And maybe self imposed good manners which determines where you post.

Therefore in the spirit of good politics and new ideas moving forward, may I suggest discussion in an idea that I have brought to the table ( and I hate hearing my own voice) on numerous occasions, and has never been discussed once, for whatever reasons (it maybe be crap but I wont to find out).

"I keep harping on about this but why not use some of our excess money to teach/educate kids in schools about domain names and Nominet (ideas on how to do this could be discussed here, maybe through school internet competitions - build a web-site) who will then themselves tell and help educate their parents. Give it, in my estimation, 5 years, starting from teaching 10 year olds, and this problem about "Nominet been unknown" and "domain renewals" will become less of a problem."

If no-one gets involved in discussing this idea, it may be good or bad, I don't know until we discuss it, then I can only conclude that either the ones that usually post don't care or probably cannot be bothered or others may be too scared to post because of the past posts of nom-steer, I hope the later because we can change this right now, we can draw the line. Who's willing to draw the line and make this a community to be proud of.

I am not trying to push this particular idea just so I can hear my own self importance, I just would like some adult discussion about interesting subjects and it may as well start now.

Even Acorn Domains has more politeness, more to be proud of and has very relevant discussions happening on there on a daily basis. Come on guys, some of you pull that particular community to bits but I now believe they have got it more together than we do, by far.

If anyone wants to discuss ideas like this (not in-depth argumentative
politics) without worry of having your head bitten off then PLEASE PLEASE PLEASE SPEAK UP. You could even email me directly and I will pass on your ideas or concerns if you are scarred to post. This may be a way for Nominet to know that there are people out there that really do care and want better things out of Nominet.

I have included myself in all of the above criticisms.

By the way I am re-standing for the PAB and so in the spirit of openness I am disclosing this now.

I also call on others who may believe in me to let me know if I have your vote.

Regards Michael Toth

My views on this are:

  • Nom-Steer should remain as is until the new forums are online - incidentally where are they? We were promised them in May 2008 if I recall correctly :)
  • We can perhaps look at new Nom-Whatevers once the new forums are in place.
  • When the new forums are launched, Nominet should telephone every member over a period of a few weeks in order to personally tell them about the new forum, what it does and how to get on it.
  • As for teaching about domains/Nominet in schools, I'm not sure. Despite the investment and promises, we still seem to be producing plenty of kids who are ignorant of things like sex education and basic reading, writing and 'rithmetic.
