now hardware isn't my strongest area of expertise

I have been waiting 6 weeks for the local satellite fitter to come and fit my dish and set top box gizmo, now when he finally arrived he says i need a dish bigger than NASA's, and could also take of the roof when windy :D

now i was looking on the old tinternet and people are advertising a box with subscription charges of one of fee of £150 for the box and £20 per month fitted.

is there anything that can be purchased off the shelf which would surfice, now what we currently have is no TV but we watch the previous weeks soaps on youtube :p via a kindle (yes you should see five people huddled around a 7" screen)

any advice would be a great help, by the way the local TV is not catered for Brits lol

sorry about my spelling i'm writing on this kindle which is almost impossible to write on due to large finger syndrome...wehe

I found an advertisement in the local expat newspaper here in Spain for a box which you can connect to your tv via USB and which streams UK tv via the internet. Believe it's the same box as you mean.. 150 Euro setup costs and 20 Euro a month. Have never tried it myself but it seems like a very good option.

What we do is download UK tv via Thebox.bz, copy it to an external HD and watch it on our tv.

I can't remember the name of that USB box but let me think about it and I am sure I will come up with.

If your in Spain or Gibraltar.. Try to get your hands on a copy of the Olive Press, a great expat newspaper which is published every 2 weeks.

Not sure were about you are in the world but an android based system will probably sort you out. Iplayer ITV player etc.
Something like this
http://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B008XX29WS/?tag=acorn06-21
just an example maybe better android options I've never needed such a device. If your kindle is the HD model that's capable of TV out already I believe
you will also probably need a dns redirector like admin posted about a while back

What do you have in the way of computers out there most modern laptops and desktops have TV-out options

Another thought the landlord of my local swears by this box
http://www.infomir.eu/ can pick them up on ebay/amazon for under £100
Can be used to premiership football subscriptions from the middle east.
I'd be amazed if they didn't work with iplayer and the like

thanks guy's this is very informative, i'm in Malta by the way :D

yes we like something as normal as possible to the uk, We moved into furnished accommodation here in Malta, there is a TV in the house but it's the old skool one which needs ten people to move it

I will get a LCD TV but at this moment pointless due to having no TV to see

I have been looking on the internet and the problem i have is VPN, now i could use the Kindle HD and use expatshield/hola for the VPN issue and use a HDMI cable from the kindle to my TV, but would this be the easiest solution, how do these media players work, can i still download expatshield/hola

What i'm trying to do is have a normal TV abroad, the funniest thing is i'm still paying my frigging TV licence :D

If the services work on your kindle then they would almost certainly work on one of the android based solutions. I know the mag boxes need services to make them appear to be connecting in Egypt for the football so they must have some such capability

yeah looked at these IPTV gizmo's, it says Africa, Middle East and such but nothing on ebay about UK

There must be plenty of options to watch UK in Malta, its like little Brittain over there.

Ask some of the locals what they use and I am sure you can find something..perhaps share the sat connection with your neighbours or something.

Great place to live, been there last year and had a really good time. Have you visited the beach at Golden Bay? Love it there.

Get yourself a dreambox and hack it, should cost you about 150 Euros. As long as you have the web its fine (the dreambox connects to your router). A guy in France gave me the codes for 60 Euros a year, I have about 250 channels here on Rhodes, including many UK ones. There are only certain channels, like sky sports, which I don't get. Well worth the money.

My dish here is only 60CM but we have the big dishes here too. You also get fins for dishes (or wings) which can turn a smaller dish into a bigger one.

Defo look at the dreambox when you get your dish sorted great little boxes PM if you want some info on the codes

thanks guy's brilliant advice, yeah most of the neighbours have a 1.5m dish on the roof and the picture can be patchy especially on BBC...can you hack the latest dreambox's (HD versions)

bloody hell this looks complex...so this is what i need so far...;)

Dreambox Machine(150euros)
1.5M Satellite Dish (500euros)
Industrial strength nuts and bolts(60euros)
cable from the first floor to the fourth (roof) (50euros)

is that about it :D

yeah been to Golden Bay, nice sand...unlike the sand in St Paul's Bay

we have melita broadband here and they are not too fussed about usage...
would it be more financially viable to get a smart tv and do what admin suggested with chrome/tvcatchup

wow more ideas come up with more problems

Yep the HD can be moded all dreamboxes have tons of possibilities for custom software etc. reading around the forums seems there are a few IPTV plugins.
May be worth having a read around and look at picking one up
Alsat and Satpimps are two good forums to get you started.

Don't forget the motor for your dish! :)

Seriously though, I deliberately limited mine, I'm using the NOVA dish that was on this house already. A guy in Rhodes Town was trying to convince me to buy this motorised 1400 Euro system, but I just dont watch enough TV to justify it.

All I really wanted were some UK channels, discovery, history and BBC news.

yeah the motor on our neighbours dish sounds like a 3.2 litre v8 when it turns, that and the water pump are sending me crazy
