I thought Fund.com (or funds.com) sold for $10m a few years back and topped the charts ?

There has been several sales larger than Sex.com. I don't feel like Googling it, but Diamonds.com, Beer.com, Porn.com and SEO.com all spring to mind.

Its hard to even see "insure.com" as a domain buy - it wasn't bought for the value of the domain, rather the site sitting on it, so its hard to compare it to a lot of pure domain purchases.

Sold domain names is worth a look. Doesn't list sex.com though so not sure how up to date it is...

I too am hopeful of getting that selling price/very close to this figure for more of my domains in near future
