How to gain Domain names.......

As Nigel, Philip and Edwin have said it really depends on your goals & budget, there is still an opening/value/an untapped potential in buying from the current registrant rather than free to reg. It just depends on your budget and balls, it is all there for those that dare right now, it's not a missed opportunity.. until tomorrow.

I do that every day, it's like a bad habit. See/hear/think up some words, throw them into domain name analyzer, check against the .couk & .orguk. If you find a beauty, grab it, if you find a 'maybe', add to reserve list.

The problem with a reserve list though, is that when you check the list a few weeks later, and find someone else has regged a handful, you then end up regretting not taking them yourself!

I know the feeling, you have a name on your list for months, you check it and think should I  2 days later you think yes why not, and bam it's gone :(

There are still a few domains out there that are undeveloped, and worth £50,000 to resellers, like many on here, and £250k to the right end user.

It just takes cash, and the guts to go for it!

Yes, I agree with this 110%. In the right cases, even something that costs £xx,xxx can be "cheap" if put into perspective compared to its likely value down the road.

I'd have to say I agree that this is where the biggest and most easily available opportunities are right now.

My sister just took out a retail franchise. I understand why, it is relatively low risk for her first business, but it will have cost her £75K in cash by the time she is open. £25K on a niche but category killer domain, £25K on a seriously good development team, and £25K marketing would have got her something of great value.

I think what holds many domainers back is 2-3 things.

1, Burden of Knowledge - i.e. We have a good sense of the digital economy bill, drs, and we can still hear the echos of the people jumping out the penthouse windows from the .com boom so its a sense of fear of sinking a house kinda money into something that could change so quickly.

2, Lack of Seed Money - This is the biggest issue for most, so you scamper around in the free to reg while you make the money to buy, then you move up the chain. This creates a comfort zone, if you find a place that puts food on the table, why risk climbing ?

and my personal fav.

2.1 - Building your seed money but not liking to sell. I HATE and I do mean hate, its on parr with people who think because there is markings on the road that pedestrians should know they are turning not going straight on, so they don't need to indicate, since cant you see the damned arrow 25 meters away on the road!

Also on par, with f'ing people who walk SIDE BY SIDE with trollys in supermarkets chatting about what soap character is humping which other beast and a speed so slow that Jenson Button thinks he's stuck in a time warp, and you can't get passed them.

Also along parr with parents who have kids that go ARRRRRRRRGH every 5 minutes down your ear, that are so piercingly loud your dog 4 miles away pee'd itself.

I could go on to describe how much I hate selling my names but I think you get the idea :p

Or crossing pelican crossings 'cos you know you're going to get in a left-to-right shuffle with the mobile phone user coming straight at you, or..

Going for a piss in any gents in the land, and always finding an insecure type who feels the need to spit in the urinal to make everyone think he's some kind of hard man, or..

Fucking speed bumps, or..

Dog owners who let their dog shit on the pavement, then leave it and walk away.

I can't put a lead on my dog (A british bulldog), its so dumb it would suffocate itself, has to have a harness and motorbike chain to hold it. Looks like a Village People reject with a leather Harness with big brass buckles and a motor bike chain for a lead :p

That some fooking dog lead Skinner! :D

Oh Dave, I took lubes.org.uk instead of anallube but nice domain :)
