How Much Time Do You Dedicate Each Day to Learning New Skills?

... *sigh* Why don't the resident haters here post something interesting themselves instead of just having a go when someone tries to start a discussion here?

I think a small number of members here have an unhealthy obsession with SEO. I mean, do you really think I am bothered about one link from here? Do you really think it is going to make any difference to me? The answer is no. Perhaps those that like to continually accuse me of link building can just put that to bed now because I really am very tired of it. I have said it before, but if you aren't interested in my threads, don't read them, or start your own ones that interest you more. Thanks.

The fact is @accelerator, we all knew that you were going to post a link as soon as you opened this thread. You read like an open book.

No you didn't. I have explained the reality in the post above, if you've actually read it. Now, do you have anything thread related and constructive to say, or do you just like trolling me?

This post is very reasonable and sane, which is so odd because it totally contradicts reality

I've never thought you were a troll before but this just seems so trollish...

But all these years of keeping it up, can't possibly be.

I won't be replying to any further comments from the normal band of Acorn haters that like to falsely accuse me of posting on this forum for links. I have explained countless times I am just starting threads for discussion. I really am in no way bothered about getting links from here. It is true that on occasion I have linked to one of my sites, but it's just for illustration and usually saves a lot of typing.

So, if anyone has anything on topic to say, go ahead. Otherwise, you will be ignored.

With regards to the topic, correct me if I'm wrong, but you've said you spend 30 minutes per day learning something new, but then have to write notes because you won't remember what you've learnt, so instead of spending time learning in the first place and writing notes, why don't you just learn what you need, as you need it?!?!

Obviously because the best online illustrator tutorials

I'm saying if it's something complex, like say doing something complicated in Illustrator, or a complex coding technique, it is not enough to just solve the problem then and there, you also need to create notes which you can refer back to which will step you through the technique again. I think this is particularly true of a lot of software or coding techniques. It's not that they are necessarily hard once you know how, but they are involved, so once you work it out the first time, you need to record it properly so you can do it again in the future. Otherwise, when you need to do it again, you are usually effectively back at square one, because unless you have an incredible memory, it is usually too involved to be able to remember over long periods of time.

One thing that works well for the half an hour a day rule is learning foreign languages. Foreign language skills are always useful to have. Just do your usual online reading but use foreign language websites and Google page translate (right click in Chrome, select translate to English) for half an hour a day and you will soon improve dramatically. The regularity of daily practice is particularly useful here.

There's some great advice from 2009 about improving Webref.eu that you've still not implemented...
http://www.sitepoint.com/forums/showthread.php?589519-WebRef-eu-Internet-Marketing-Resource-Site

You've clearly put a lot of work in to accumulate 300+ pages of information and resources, so why don't you take the next step and redesign it to be easily navigable, user-friendly and at least moderately mobile-friendly/modern? That's probably going to be a more effective use of your 30 minutes a day than trying to learn a new skill would be.

This is actually underway and I have started a redesign using Bootstrap. I'm not sure about when it will get done though. It's not like I don't agree it should be done, it is just that it's of low priority compared to the other things on my rather long To Do list.

Now about this pickle. If the site was paying his mortgage or helping one survive in this time of economic hardship, is it really such a crime to sprinkle a few links here and there..

i count research as learning, maybe what you need to know today but someday.
i'd have to say i spend @ 4 hours a day researching and learning, half that time is spent on youtube, a great resource i feel.

as i work 12+ hours a day its affordable time.
