Wanted: Domain Appraisal How much should I ask for this domain?

I registered a bike domain that dropped in December, the previous owner of the domain posted on a forum about it in February, see here: Domain trouble

I've had no contact from the previous owner with regards to the domain, so maybe he's not that interested in wanting it back, or thinks I will want a silly amount for it.

I'm going to send him an email saying I came across that forum topic, and explain a bit about domain renewals and why it dropped, if he wants it back, what sort of price do you think I should ask for the domain?

by offering it for sale to him will give him ammo for a drs win as it will look like you bought to make a profit on his business.

@ Paul, yes, I had thought a lot about DRS, but I came to the conclusion that as the words of the domain are generic and the term is a common one, and that he has no trademark on the name that I'm aware of, along with him doing nothing to actively keep his domain by not renewing in the months between the renewal date and drop date, that it would be hard for him to prove a case against me via DRS

Also, with regards to it being an abusive registration, it was free to reg and I have a genuine interest in bike related domains, I have about 40 bike related names registered, I knew nothing of the name before it dropped, it was simply a generic name I liked, as in $elect bikes of the upper end of the bike market, which also goes well with my other bike domains, so in my own view, it wouldn't be easy for him to claim abusive registration.

Incidentally, I'm not looking for loads for the name, I had a figure in my head of asking around £200 for it.

im not saying you bought to sell, im just saying the way the DRS is these days. if i was you read some drs cases and then decided if its worth the risk...

@ Paul, yes, I understand what you meant and that you are being helpful, my reply wasn't meant to come across as defensive, it's just how I'm mulling it over in my head.

yes, I've read quite a few DRS links that have been posted on here., I was thinking, well, if he does wan't to DRS me, that's going to cost him at least couple of hundred quid anyway as I would contest any DRS, and something might even be worked out in mediation as a compromise, I don't know, but I'm thinking I might give it a pop and see what he says, hmmm

A better way may be to post on the forum they have and offer it for sale there. As you are not making direct contact(harder to use against you). As its a web design one ask for a review or something of the site saying something along the lines of "I was going to develop it but I might just sell it for £200 pounds" and ask members if they think you should sell it or develop it ?

If I was offered my company name back for £200 because I couldn't be bothered to renew it, i'd be round your house with the cash, no matter where you live. Get out jail card....

I would just wait it out. If he wants it back he will contact you.

Its the fair thing to do aswell.

If he doesnt contact you, well then he obviously isnt bothered about it.

i agree I'd wait it out too, if his business depended on the domain then he'd be all over it

it is difficult to know what will happen in such circumstances but wait for them to play the 1st card... be patient

That's the thing, I can't find anything for the domain on archive.org, so I don't think he forwarded it to his .com domain, unless it was set up a certain way that the archive doesn't show it, but it usually shows domains forwarded to another domain on there. Maybe he only used it for email, not sure, might explain why he hasn't made contact, then again, his forum post shows he wanted it back, but maybe he can live without it now.

I might post on that webmaster site stating I'm the new owner of the domain which I intend to develop, and explain the domain renewal/drop procedure to him so that he doesn't lose any more domains that way.

It's possible he had a robots disallowed txt file in the root.
