Its done deal with all the other TLD’s etc announced they’d be idiots not too sooner than latter as the importance of names generic and emd etc start there decline?

I did wonder when all this devolution etc is being announced if there would be .GB, SC etc Its clever because it doesn’t matter if Joe public takes to them or not first instance because domainers will all be regging them you could even say nom offering uk to co.uk is like offering smack to a junkie :D

Aren't options 4 and 5 the same in this poll? ;) The top two you have 'inevitably' which means 100% and 'very good chance' which is close to but less than 100% but bottom you have 'unlikely' which means above 0% and 'almost certainly' which is above 0%. There is no 'definitely' option in the low end.

I wouldn't be surprised if someone near the top's bonus depended on the implementation, so it is likely to be pushed all the way! Or is that my cynical side showing :)

If it was free for the first few years that would give them an out, however long term it's a cash cow.

"we do appreciate there are corner cases, such as treatment of short domains, that require closer scrutiny"

What the hell does that mean? Are LLL domains going to get treated differently?

No. She's talking about the special case of the l and ll domains i.e. the ones that were auctioned for over £3,000,000 in 2011 (and never released via a first come, first served mechanism like other domains have been).

The way the auctions were run at the time, the timing of each extension's release (.co.uk, .org.uk, .me.uk) was out of control of the buyers, and even though the .co.uk buyers paid pretty close to every penny of that £3,000,000, the winning domains in other extensions were released earlier by Nominet.

Obviously in 2011 Nominet had no idea that nearly 2 years later they would be using "oldest registrant" as a determinant to hand out .uk domains, but they've nonetheless acknowledged the problem (one of their own making).

Whether they will take the next step and actually fix it (simple solution: highest bidder from the 2011 auctions out of of .co.uk/.org.uk/.me.uk wins the .uk since Nominet have already wrung everything they could out of the process and profited mightily from it) is another matter, but we can always hope they get smart and take care of it.

Russian Roulette

Astonishing… to quote Nominet…

“we have been also asked whether we can prove that second level registrations will help .uk combat the launch of gTLDs. I'm sorry to disappoint, but there is no ‘proof’ that this will work, any more than there is proof that it won’t”

This should not be a game of Russian Roulette, we’ve seen from the investment banking sector that this approach can have disastrous consequences at all levels.

The fundamentals of business are being ignored, any GCSE business student could spot this. A thorough and detailed assessment of the risks v benefits is essential. “Gut feel” should not come in to this.

That whole blog post reads to me that this is happening, not maybe and i think they may have forgotten to make an effort to try and even pretend otherwise. Especially:

"We expect this will change over time, particularly as the imminent launch and promotional campaigns get underway and begin to educate the market about available options."

Think this refers to the other gTLDs?

Any changed votes?

How likely do you think we are to see a .uk go ahead?

Now the dust has settled a bit on Nominet's V2.0 .uk proposal
and Edwin has generated a good considered case for .uk not to go ahead.

Plus we have had a roundtable and a chance to reflect,
would anybody change their original vote on the question on this thread?

I voted 50/50 which I still stand by (at the moment) although if the trend continues in the direction I feel it is going it, I consider V2 .uk would not go ahead!

My gut feeling is that .uk will surely launch eventually, and the current plan of registration priority will stay (I've yet to see a better alternative to oldest reg'd put forward). My hunch is that a V3 with some little amendments will be the final one.

I should add the disclaimer that I've already spent £££ in preparation of .uk, so I may be a little biased!
