How fast is your broadband?

What cloud backup do you use Edwin? We wrote our own a while back using Rackspace CloudFiles, but I'm considering options for replacing it..

Using FTTC from Fast.co.uk I'm getting at home:

60.9Mbps down
10Mbps up

and in the office in the middle of the country side with just 20CN ADSL available:

7Mbps down
0.8Mbps up

LOCAL BACKUP (daily)
- second internal HDD (actually the 3rd physical HDD since I've got the system files on an SSD and the data on a HDD)
- network-attached HDD (backup #2)

REMOTE BACKUP (daily)

A) FOR DATA
- Mozy.com (backup #1)
- Backblaze.com (backup #2)

B) FOR GOOGLE STUFF
- Backupify.com

Yes, I know the above is "overkill" but I have stuff going back to the early 90s on my PC and once it's gone, it's gone forever. Documents, photos, websites, notes (lots and lots and lots of those) etc. etc.

Overall, it's "worth" it to me to go to those lengths to be 100.00% sure I can hang onto everything.

I don't live in UK but speedtest.net reports at:
58.74 Mbps download
2.11 Mbps upload

Im not far off those numbers and im on 38Mb Infinity plan.

Not happy with BT.

Internet is way to slow, Wifi reception is very poor, a lot of problems with their extra channels, the BT Youview box is slow and very noisy.

Does anyone know if you can switch provider while you still have a contract?

You should have no problem with youview on that kind of speed. We have just put it in and I am running the extra channels through powerline adapters (They tell you this wont work) and runs perfectly. Our internet is at a slower speed than yours.

I am not sure how it all works, but could there be faults on the line or at the box etc? Maybe someone else knows a bit more about it.

It seems to be the box itself which keeps losing it's internet connection.

BT came out, did some work on the line which helped as my internet is now more stable but they say nothing can be done about the speed.

Running the extra channels through Powerline? So you can watch tv in another room? Now that sounds interesting as I still need a solution for tv in the bedroom, I have tried the Magic eye tv but this didn't work for me.

Would you mind sharing details on what you have done?

Thanks

The powerline adapters are just to get to the router, rather than having to wire an ethernet cable. We have 1 powerline adapter at the router, 1 at the tv and 1 in my office for the pc, then laptops on wireless.

BT state that the extra channels will not work with powerline and that you have to use ethernet cable only, but I figure that is just so they dont get support calls from people with bad wiring etc.

I think the only way to watch in other rooms is to buy more boxes, unlike SKY you can run as many boxes as you wish on the same subscription. I believe the RF output on youview is just a passthrough for the aerial signal to go to your TV, incase you want freeview on both.

Sorry to split hairs but the YouView box doesn't directly have an internet connection to lose. It needs to connect to a router. Is the router losing its internet connection constantly? If not I suspect you may simply have a problem on your LAN. How exactly have you got the two devices connected?

What does the link I provided above suggest you should sync at?

He's likely talking about connecting a wired switch port in his router (I assume one of the BT Home Hub's) to the BT YouView box using Ethernet. BT prefer it to be achieved using a complete end to end traditional CAT5E or CAT6 cable and won't support Powerline adapters due to the potential for problems. Of course it still works for many and is desirable because most homes won't have structured Ethernet cabling throughout their walls, therefore is better than running a cable at the surface along the carpet.

If you want the YouView outputting to an additional television, look for an HDMI splitter and then run HDMI to it, or HDMI over Ethernet using appropriate converter adapters. There should be a method of remotely changing the channel which you will probably come across if you research this.

Initially the router was losing the connection to the internet but after a few weeks this was solved, I now have the problem that the Youview box has no connection where my internet still works.

What link do you mean?

How exactly have you got the two connected? Is the YouView box successfully obtaining an IP address from the router using DHCP?

First one in post #34 of this thread.

(from iPhone)

It is connected via a LAN cable, have tried another cable to see if that would make any difference.

This is what I get:

Download speed : 17.52Mbps
Upload speed : 8.91Mbps

But that's contending with PS4 online (cat5), Laptop (wireless) and my Mac (cat5).... and the usual Saturday night 9pm business from the pipe in the populated area...

Fibre from BT has shown me 36Mbps on a good day.. am only 1 min walk from the box.

Reasonably happy with BT supply and service... no downtime as yet.

Virgin have a fibre 20 feet away but they refuse to put it into our street.... however with Moto GP on BT sport this year... I think I'll be sticking with the BT option

;-)
